Hi - Wondering if anyone knows if membership is open in The Grange Rathfarnham.

    How much is membership and
    How much are green fees.

I played golf many many years ago (but gave up when I got married) now I'd like to restart and bring along my 12 year son as a juvenile member

    can anyone help

    thanks

I played the course recently as an invite from a member, it has 6 par 3's . It's decent but it ain't worth the fee below.

The green fees for a non-member are €80. I have no idea about new membership, obviously be best contacting the club direct and asking them.

I know that they ain't short of members so it could be still pricey. I'll find out for you from a member exactly how much the cost of membership is.

That would be brilliant - and if you could ask about juvenile membership all the better.

    thanks a million

There used to be a very long waiting list there. Don't know if that is the case now. Also they liked new members to start off as Pavillion Members.

AFAIK the grange took in 500k in joining fees this year for 20 full timers at 20k each and 10 (weekday maybe pavillion maybe 5-day) members at 10k each. So there is member churn.

You need to contact the club and also to find out who you know there as you would need to be nominated. Long waiting list still I believe

The above is correct, you need to know people. I will still chase it up for you and let me know for sure. Contact the club in the meantime.

 For that kinda money & hassle I'd want membership to come with a pair of 19 yr old Swedish glamour model twins on standby, one to caddy for me and one to be my masseuse!

There is 24 holes so they mix and match the course so it can be Par 72 and very hard when they take out all the short ones. You won't lose too many balls but you need to be able to perfect keeping the ball 5ft off the ground to get out of the trees :P

Rathfarnham is a very pricy & built up area. Probably no shotage of high earning golfers wanting to join a club on their doorstep... not much chance of the recession hitting hard there.

There is no particular member shortage, the problem, as with all clubs is balancing membership with tee availability.

There are now multiple membership categories for members.
From full down to 5-day, pavillion, etc
Reduced playing priveliges for reduced fees, and you get "credit" when/if you move up a category.

As a juvenile its much easier to get in if a family member etc is already in.
The last batch of members to get in was a couple of months ago so probably not much movement until next year.

@Famous, yeah we have 6 par 3's (on "one" of the course layouts) but I dont think that has any impact on the quality of the course. The shortest is 120M moving up to 190M.

Out of interest, what didnt you like about the course and what tees did you play off?

Get more info and Contact details @ http://www.grangegolfclub.com

Oh and the bar/restaurant levy is included in the subs, €250 and you get a discount when paying with your card.

Pavillion is deffo the way to go, at least you get playing straight away and the playing privileges arent too bad.

    /edit
oh and if you want them to like you, dont call it The Grange, its just "Grange" ;)

Sorry for dragging up an old one - just wondering what shape Grange is in lately and any tips for playing the course? First time playing there this week, and have heard it's quite nice...

Its in very good condition at the moment just wet in places, but after today and yesterday it should be fine. I'm up there tonight so will let you know tomorrow.
Greens are true and running well.
Rough is heavy and very penal, especially if wet.
Trees are in the way most of the time :o

I have a guide up on the course guides thread for the course you will probably be playing.

I hear that there is to be an EGM for The Grange with regards to dramatically dropping the hello money to below 10k. Also heard there is only 30% of members on full fees. There is hope for people looking to join it yet!!!

Really enjoyed today, played quite decent and a lovely course. Tough in parts, but always fair.... I do find the par3-par3 start a little odd but I'm sure you get used to it!

Highlight of the day was a super birdie on 17 - oh, and a 20 footer for par on the devilish third!

Good to hear, nice birdie. The first is such a tough opening Par 3 I am always happy walking off with a 4 many a time my round has been finished after the 1st. As mentioned before they have 3 different courses mixing and matching the other 6 holes the 72 doesn't include the 2nd and other par 3s. They haven't done it much this summer though- Greenbo do you know why they haven't really mixed up the course this summer every comp has been the P love course?

Nope no idea why this year is so different to be honest. I thought maybe it was because there were pavilion comps on out there but I've been out there after my round a few times (dont ask!) and there hasnt been anything on out there. Place is drier out there if anything so thats not a reason either. I know some people complained last year about not playing the "proper" course as the other layouts are a good bit longer, perhaps the lack of run is exaggerating this and they think its unfair on the older members?

You really are addicted going out for more after your round :p Got 2 friends in as Pavillon members so have gone out to the other 6 a few times but would like to play them in the comp - some of the holes out there are better then original course. The par 4 over the wall is a monster from the blues when the ball is on the front tier just down near the slope try and get the ball within 10ft from just over the back!!

Greens, tees and fairways were just pole-forked & sanded last week so I'd give it another week or two.

I'll see what its like tomorrow, but they used the larger tines on some of the greens so it probably wont be great yet.

more importantly, do they do nice breakfasts :-)

Played there 10 days ago & while pole forked they were not too bad to play and should be better now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,465 ✭✭✭✭GreeBo

not too bad today, very slow though.
much better then last week, will be grand in a week.

that's a pic of the putting green, main greens are better

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 318 ✭✭Unglika Norse

Needs a bit more sand on that

they don't sand it before competition.
either way, I'm pretty sure they know what they are doing...

Beautiful course I have to say,
Fairways and Greens were in an awful state though.
Would love to play it again when it's in good condition.

yep, they scalped everywhere, hollowcored all the short grass and dumped on 900 tonnes of sand...so not surprising you noticed ;)

Gimme a shout next time in advance and I can let you know, captains is end of Aug, so anytime around then will be pristine.

    Good stuff,
It plays a good bit longer than the course yardage suggests, or is that just me ?
The Par 5 down the hill is a cracker, and the 18th is a great finishing hole.

It plays long enough on the front 9 anyway, a lot of the time you arent just bashing a driver so you are left with a long enough iron to the green. 3, 4, 7. 10, 16 are long enough par 4s.
1, 8, 11 are very long par 3s so despite the par 68 (SSS 69) off the blues, you have to be able to hit it and hit it straight.

5, 9, 12, 13, 18 can be short par 4s with a good drive, but if you aint straight in grange it typically costs you are least 1 shot, not too many trees you can hit it over. (100+ year old chestnuts)
