Today when knocking the iPhone into Silent mode, the switch broke off! The phone isnt even 9 months old! I rang O2 who told me to drop into an O2 store. But they also that it couldnt happen unless the phone got a big knock etc.

Thing is, the phone is immaculate! Its never been dropped! Anyone else have this problem?

I know your pain. I have a 2G jailbroken iPhone which is fairly old and the switch broke ages ago. There was a software fix in the old firmware version 1.2 or 1.3 but I havent seen one since the 2.0 firmware was released. I'm yet to find a solution to it other than trying to open it up and mess around with it. I havent done that and don't plan to do so.
So basically I'm no help to you :)

Surely Apple will sort this under warranty for you? They have a seriously fast turn around time! Give them a shout.

I done this to my phone, not quite broken off but whatever it catches inside the iphone its not catching. Mine was definetly from a drop though i took it from its protective case and dropped it.

I have accidental damage cover on it with CPW but havent bothered to get it repaired yet. I was thinking of doign the old stolen phone routine and getting a replacement because i reckon it will be faster than getting it fixed but again have been too lazy to bother.
