Out of curiousity, is your motivation to get fit etc or purely to learn self defence ? If it's the latter good old fashioned boxing is hard to beat combined with some running and weights, do remember Ali did say the fight is one or lost on the road and in the gym not in the ring. For self defence you can dismiss Karate up to Black belt, even at that it's p1ss poor in the real world. For self defence you need to block punches primarily, also you need to remember to position yourself so the attacker can't bop you or grab you by the throat. Being able to kick to the head etc is a luxury that won't be particularly uselful in a street attack.

There are weekend courses in Krav Maga available from time to time in Cork, you could do worse than do on, again this is really defence minded, not attack at all really. Thing about self defence is the more of it you do the more you realise how vulnerable you are when attacked. Lots of folk reckon they will be invincable if they do karate, kick boxing or tae kwon do a couple of times a week. No the case.

There's an add up in the clarion for Krav Maga
I think that's a pretty hardcore self defence type thing.

    Thanks for the replies!

Mostly it's about fitness, I'd like to know more about fighting and defending myself but in a realistic way, I get the feeling that alot of it's just bull in a every day situation, like a few of ye said before me.

Gonna go look into these suggestions now!

There's a judo club in Coláiste Chríost Rí in Turners cross, 8-10pm on Mondays and Thursdays. It's a very good club and very friendly members, beginners are always welcome. Its great if you want to get fit and there is a lot of practical self defence too, well worth a look.

There's a Keysi KFM club in UCC (anyone welcome) which trains Keysi with the only qualified Keysi instructor in Ireland.

It's a very aggressive and effective form of self defence.

    More information here.

A new white belt class should be up and running in September, we train throughout the summer also.
