    Hi all,

Can anyone tell me how I can get hold of RTE smart-card for my satellite receiver (independent brand). Its an independent receiver so I can't use Sky or NTL.

I am a TV License subscriber, but the people in TV-License didn't have a clue what I was talking about, all the options they had were NTL or SKY.....

    any ideas!

The only way at present to pick up RTE by Satellite, is via Sky. There is no alternate.

There's a reason for that, there's no such thing. Maybe your mixing it up with the UK FTV card scheme. :)

Unless you want to fork out cash to Sky, you will not recieve RTÉ via satellite.

NTL will also want a few quid off you, but that is no use on your satellite box as they are CABLE only.

Your best bet is to probably get the RTÉ channels is via an aerial terrestrially.

    Hi,

Its not really good enough that as a tax payer and license payer I cannot view RTE as I want. RTE is forcing me to either use analogue signals (inferior quality ?) or digital signals monopolised through SKY and UPC.

Any ideas who is responsible for this mess ?

    Regards

Yes- that would be a combination of the imbeciles we voted into the Houses of the Oireachtas, along with Comreg- who seem to have zero mandate for asserting the interests of the public- instead viewing themselves as a champion of industry.

It's been discussed to death here tbh. An example showing the pro's and con's is here. A further search and you will find many more.

RTÉ can be viewed digitally via terrestrial DTT TV for free, but currently it is only in a test stage before any official launch, so as it stands you can pick up RTÉ 1/RTÉ 2/TV3/TG4 but it is by no means a stable service aimed at the public at present. See here for more info.

A trial phase was completed last year & no specific launch date for the Irish DTT service has been announced as yet.

    See http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055573811

This has been covered many times. There is no Irish Satellite Service. Sky is a Foriegn TV service that happens to sell in Ireland. They give RTE free encryption and carriage to be in the Sky Irish subscription pack or else Irish TV would not be on Satellite at all.

Before RTE went Widescreen, the Analogue pictures (with a good aerial) where superior to any on Sky Digital. Digital is about Widescreen, HD, Features and more channels. Not primarily about quality, though for the main channels the quality is "as good as" good Analogue.

Thread closed as this have been ranted about many times.

The TV licences isn't for watching RTE, it's for watching (receiving really) ANY TV, even if you only watch Polish TV in Ireland.
