    Hi,

my dentist - based in south - has referred me to an ex colleague of his in the north for a consultation re possible gum surgery (I show a lot of gum when smiling) and crowns. am worried now after a few comments about cheap & poor quality lab work in N.I. Is there at least one good lab up there? would he get cranky if I specified a particular lab here. some posters here get lab work abroad - is there such a big difference in quality?

    Thanks

You really dont know enough about it to dictate which lab a dentist uses. You will find that a specialist or good dentist will use quality lab work.

There are plenty of good labs in the north and some bad labs in the south. The problems is that low cost labs (the kind used by low cost dentists) tend to have very variable results.

Also specify the result you want and make sure nothing is fitted that does not meet your expectations. Let the dentist know from the outset that you wish nothing but the best, this will cost more but its usually worth it.

Its nothing to do with north or south, its to do with quality and time. Good quality takes time and this cost money. There are many excellent dentists up north, however these may not be the ones that pander to the southern bargain hunter.

    Thanks fitzgeme,

My dentist knows & trusts him so he must be good, and hopefully uses one of the good labs. Initial consultation is £100 so I don't think I'll be joining the cheap north/ripoff south debate, but I'll take it that I'm paying for his expertise and that's OK.
