My boyfriend's housemate is going travelling around Asia, Australia and South America between October and April. She's having her going away party next week and I would like to get her a going away present. Has anybody suggestions as to what might be useful for her travels? Thanks!

    Travel Journal.

A lonely planet guide to the first place she is going.

Some new music for her MP3 player.

    A book.

Currency of the first country she is going too inside a going away card.

    A mosquito net.

    A small torch.

    Condom.

    Travel towel - great invention!
Illuminois plastic bagagge labels - handy!
Waterproof backpack cover - again bright colour
Mac in a sac kinda thing
Flannelette (sp?) PJ's - everyone forgets them but they are great to get into when homesick-would be lost without mine

    Hope this helps !

A lovely, cute yet practical and very importantly robust diary. May seem old fashioned but it certainly suggests that you put thought into what to get her.
Keeping with the times tho you may want to replace that with a high capacity memory card for her digital camera...more pics=more stored memories. Make sure to check with your boyfriend what make and model her camera is so you get the right one. (try to go for a minimum of 4gb if not 8gb)

    Hope that helps ;)

If she intends to do any camping then I would recommend a good thermarest.

i used mine all the time when travelling - it has a little torch which came in really handy when i got back to my hostel late at night and didnt want to wake people with the big light. Its got a tweezers, cos i always used to lose my main one. A nail file, scissors, knife, cork screw, little mirror...and other stuff. It looks cute too.

I accidentally forgot to put it in my checked luggage going thru an airport one time and it sadly got taken away from me :(
