I am seriously considering doing a triathlon next year, I have one question that im curious about. Although I know everyone's training and experience is different but what would someone, who never raced before on a bike but will train for a few months before the big day, expect to cycle the triathlon on the day. What would their average speed be. Or even post your own average speed.
Im just curious as to what I would be looking at.

Depends on a few factors - bike, tyres, training, how hilly it is, wind, draft legal or not etc. For me id probably average 19mph in moderately hilly sprint tri on the racer, maybe 20mph on a flatter course with low wind.

My first tri last year I did the bike section in 1hr 25mins for 40k on a specialized stumpjumper mountain bike with skinny tyres. I pretty much finished last but I had big smiles all the same. I had been doing a moderate level of mountain biking for a few years, but no major hard training.

Look up the results from previous triathlons to get an idea. For example, heres the tri athy 2009 sprint tri results:

This is a flat out and back route and is considered quite a fast cycle route.

I did my first triathlon duathlon at Eireman
Sprint distance on a mountain bike with road tyres and with 3 weeks training I managed to average 32km/h on the bike - pretty pleased with that :D

On a road or tri bike with some decent mileage done beforehand you should be able to manage 30+kph (18+mph)
