Advised to go on housing list in order to get Rent Allowance?

    Hiya,

I went yeterday to try and apply for rent allowance. However, as and from 27 July you must show evidence of having paid rent at your current address for at least 6 months! I am only 2 months here! :(

The lady advised me to call into Dublin City Council (big building on the Quays?) and ask to be put on the housing list. They will send me a letter of acceptance and if I bring that back to her I can re-apply for the rent allowance before the 6 months!

Does anybody have experience of this? What does she mean by housing list? Surely I have to be working in order to get that?

Any advice would be welcome! Thanks!

housing list generally means that you fill in forms applying to become a tenant of you local council/county council

This is standard procedure. Just go into the housing authority and get the forms to go on the list, the housing authority will then arrange a meeting with you and either approve you or disapprove you to have your name on the hosuing list, either way you still get your rent supplement. This is just part of the procedure.

    Hi
just had to go through this too - only problem being that it took over 2 months for my council to put me on the list (due to a back log) and I had to cover the rent during this time (i.e. no back pay from the CWO whilst waiting to get on list).

    Good luck

thanks guys!! I should have known there would be a significant waiting list! Oh well! :(

Is this housing list the same thing as the affordable housing scheme or is it a list for council houses?

Which I assume you would have to be employed for?

    Hi
its a list for council housing - which you don't need to be employed for.

Agree with everything Fran has said only it took me 4.5 months to get on the list earlier this year. I am in Dublin
