Annoying niggle with SMS

Is there any way, once you start typing a message which you then send, to hide the keyboard again so you can view the message trail with the entire screen without having to go out of that contacts messages and back in again ?

Hitting the edit button kind of does that. Hit it again to get the keyboard back.
