Hi. I'm thinking of getting some lessons at one of these academies. Anyone have experience at them or know somebody who's tried them out? Some help would be greatly appreciated.

    Zak.

I was researching the exact same thing today, another boardsie Recommended the pro in Kinsealy-Grange but above that are the prices.

Barry Power is €45 per 30min lesson or 6 for €220

Karl Herbert is €35 per 30min lesson or 5 for €140 (5 lessons for the price of 4)

    Pretty stark difference.

I have had a few lessons with Barry Power (bought six lessons) and would highly recommend him. Rather than trying to completely remodel my swing, Barry has made some minor adjustments and each time I have had a lesson I have come away with a noticeable improvement.

Plus you get a DVD of your lesson to bring home which is very useful.

    +1

I've found the video lesson and swing analysis invaluable - really helps to see what a pro is talking about when he's pointing out a swing problem.

I much prefer the "The Grange" as a driving range mind you, but that's a separate issue.

The Grange has full a full video analysis room also, I know the two pros there personally and both are really good.

For the majority of club players video analysis is a waste of time and merely adds unnecessary detail in my opinion.

    I agree with f22.

I also am noting the ridiculousness of the use of the term "Academy", and how people seem to immediately (and blindly) go for it. It's a chap in a driving range giving lessons.

i found video analysis to be very useful. i had no idea how my setup & swing really looked and was quite an eye opener to see the issues. a pro could have said to me - "youre not hinging your wrists, blah blah...." but to see it on the screen was much more illuminating.

as usual, its down to the pro & how they explain it too.

Karl is actually just €30 per lesson so thats €120 for 5.

Video analysis are €10 extra AFAIK in Kinsealy.

Well playing off 7 and hitting the ball pretty, he did pretty much remodel my swing, well that's what it feels like. I did see what he was trying to do, cos after seeing my swing on video, oh sh!t, horrific, cant believe how I swing.
Anyway worked on it and am going back for 2 more lessons. I won my 1st comp after the year the wknd after the lesson. don't think it was the swing change, as my putting was hot that day but I did hit the ball consistently straighter. One thing though, he told me I was losing 40% of power with a lack of wrist hinge, had to laugh at that cos if I did gain this "40%" I'd be hitting 6 iron from 230yards!

Anyway can recommend him, but each to their own, some may prefer someone elses methods.

    Video analysis is very worthwhile

    Lol,pretty true though.
Its funny how this video analysis seems to be rocket science,as if it is a new thing.
I have been taping my own swing for the last 5 years and watching it/analysing it.
All you need is a basic digital camera or camcorder and some analysis software like CSwing.
    Its simple to do.

Kinsealy Grange is a superb facility!! It's right on my doorstep. Been out there yesterday and today, got me a coffee and smacked away balls at my leisure. The Cafe looks very nice also.

Got a lesson off the female pro today also, she was excellent...almost immediate improvement however it will be down to be to translate it onto the course.

I dont like the type of tees they use in kinsealy i perfer barry power electronic tees where u can adjust the height at the touch of a button and not having to lift up the mat in kinsealy

Is he even a PGA pro yet?

    Deirdre Judge ftw ;)

There'll be upcoming competitions in Kinsealy too, probably involving targets and possibly long drive.

Will certainly get more lessons off her.

Sounds like fun, adds an extra dimension to the place. Driving ranges usually seem boring and soulless but Kinsealy-Grange feels more like a clubhouse! I havnt been to Drynam yet so I'll not try compare.

I had three lessons with Barry Power earlier this year. I am surprised it took me to the third lesson to find out what a [edited] he is. I have since found out that he is not even a PGA qualified "Pro". I though that was the basic level for teaching?
He spent the whole time comparing me to some other pupils he has or telling me about how great his TV ads are.
I could write on the back of a match box what I had learnt.
My experience says stay away from this [edited]. I prepaid for six but had no desire to go back for the remaider.

I gotta say I had a lesson with Barry Power well over a year ago and was very disappointed. First of the lesson cost €45 for 25 minutes (5 minutes short) than another €8 or something for balls which you have a get. So it came to €53!!!!! I was compared to Woods and Weir and was thinking… gosh what’s the point in comparing me to Pro’s when my aim was to simply hit it straight. Then there were a few drills he showed me which I wasn’t over found of… Both the drills and comparing me to the Pro's took too much time out of my lesson, its a golf lesson try help me with my swing not take an age with the video gear!!!

I’m sure the comparisons with pro’s and drills are of benefit but I felt he concentrated far too much of my lesson on his fancy video gear, apparently he got some new part or devise and was keen to use it.

Sure you get a DVD and get to hear his nice Dublin accent, but I later had lessons with another Pro and found it very helpful, its a key concept to improve. In general I felt the lesson was not great and definitely not value for money, only my opinion anyway folks

glad i didn't go to BP so!
i decided to go to David Lavelle out at the Spawell Range due to seeing his name mentioned on boards.ie
€40 for half an hour, which isn't cheap in this day and age...
but,i found him to be very personable which was a help...not at all intimidating...
he corrected me on 3 things (not too many which to me makes more sense) and told me to practice them...sounds simple enough but i feel my game can improve with his advice....
will head back to him after a few more practice settings at the driving range, and i'll see how it goes...
maybe most of the pros are pretty good, but i just thought i'd throw my 2 cents in...

I highly recommend Kevin Garvey in Bellinter (its just off the N3 near Royal Tara). When I started going to him I was a bad 10. I got to 4 in a few years, got me striking the ball well for the first time in my life. But for a dreadful short game I might have got lower. Kevin keeps things simple and its easier to go away and practice one or two simple drills. I think he charges €30 euro for a half hour
