hi, my husband passed his driving test in 1998,for car and hgv.His licence was issued in dublin,he lost his license and went bout getting a new one. but when he went to local motor tax office they could not find any record of it, we happened to have the driving license number on insurance certificate. when he presented this number it did not match up to his name but it matched someone else.
He was then told that he would have to reapply for provisional and do his driving test again, even though he has done nothing wrong,
Anyone got any advice or had the same thing happen to them?

Your husband got a total jobsworth in the office... its extremely unlikely if not impossible that they've managed to lose the licence details entirely off the national driver file. When you apply for a replacement for a lost licence you don't need the number, just as many details as possible, and they can do a search for it.

Any idea how long it took them to pronounce that they had no record of it? Was it the original tax office (or the original council) that he got his licence off? You don't need to go to the original one, indeed you're not meant to if you've moved, but they'd be more likely to have records I suspect.

Another thing is that if he has ever had penalty points the RSA will most definitely have a proper record of his details!

He orginally got his licence in dublin, and then went to wexford for new one, lady at desk said there was nothing she could do about it, i said insurance company has a copy of the original but she said that didnt matter.

It does matter, there is a PHOTOCOPY in the insurance company office and if they certify that they took the photocopy and send you a copy of it then you will get much further .

What test centre did he use and when, see them too .
