It's awful! It translates "I enjoyed myself" to "Taitneamh as mé féin". The French and German (my other two languages) are very accurate. But the Irish one is crap!

again i would point to the place on the website which allows yu to provide a better, or more often than not right version in place of the translation you got

Google Translations has improved significantly since being first introduced. Can this cash starved nation now allow public bodies to guide their customers to this site for translation rather than spend millions translating reports.

The government should do that, but it just puts even more people out of work.

Also, Google Translate can't really be used for important government stuff without a human translator to verify it's 100% correct.

Problem is - english german other strong languages can handle texts in their languages with mistakes dotted around the internet as there is enough good english or german in print to make sure the language stays accurate.

there is a very good chance that sites with poor irish will outnumber sites with accurate irish if GT continues too spit out mistaken translations and ignore suggestions as highlighted above

For people like me who are learning the Irish language, it's entirely too convenient to use. I come here for my translations or work 'em out myself but I can see it turning the language upside down for the internet savvy and language ignorant.

Wonder what the impact on languages the internet will have? Will it spawn more corruptions of original languages faster? When a new society learned a language, it'd get "corrupted" into a new form. So, what will be the outcome of this debacle?

Where I live, English dies a horrible, painful death. I do my level best to not correct people's English - but my kids get corrected constantly for things they learn socially or from school.

IE: "waste bends" <--this one caused tears for me, both for comic value and for the fact that it was written by a 7th grade physical education teacher.

I'm not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but being raised by an English teacher and a professional writer who was raised by Irish and Scottish nannies - I was brought up with a strong base in American English and some UK English. "Grey" looks correct while "gray" does not...
