Have decided to head off for 7-10 days in early Oct. Wouldn't mind visiting a few different cities. I'll be travelling alone (for the first time) and intend to slum it up in hostels etc. Anyone got any vague suggestions for a good route?

    Thanks, Trig

Try to fly into Berlin, then get a train from the airport to the central station.

The Berlin central station is the biggest train station in Europe, it's where a lot of backpackers choose to start as you can get information on almost all the routes and pick up good info on traveling in general.
Remember to get an unlimited ticket, they're around €50-60 last time I heard, they last for a month...I think. And it gives you unlimited travel on all main lines throughout Europe.

Instead of hostels, you could go for late trains and sleep on them, save a bit of money like.

    Hope this helps.

spend longer if you can. 7-10 days will fly by FAST!

brussels is a great starting point because its a small, beautiful and incredible safe city.. but more importantly, belgium has a great rail system and is the central nexus of the European rail network.

Agreed on this, plus Belgian rail prices are half price at weekend. I could see this happening in Ireland:rolleyes:. Plus when in Brussels its only a small rail journey to Brugge which is so worth a visit. Amsterdam and Paris quite close also
