    Hello All,

I’m not sure if any of you have heard of the Race Around Ireland. It is a 1350 mile (2200km) non-stop cycle race around Ireland – as the name suggests. It is sanctioned by the Ultra Marathon Cycling Association and is a round of their World Cup series. You can see all the details at http://www.racearoundireland.com/.

If you look at the website you’ll see that there is a solo category and categories for 4 and 8 person teams. I am doing the race as part of a 4 person team called the Beara 4. The teams compete in this event by cycling in relays. Each team must have a follow must have a follow car behind their riders at all times and another vehicle is needed to leap frog the riders on the road and carry the next rider up the road to a change over point. To do this effectively and allow everyone get enough rest needs a large support crew. We currently have 9 people on the crew but we urgently need one more person.

The role of the person we need will involve navigating and/or driving either a follow car or a support van during the daylight hours and at night. Navigation is by means of a detailed road book but we want navigators to be map readers also. Apart from the driving and navigating there is a lot of hardship involved – for example 4 hours on 4 hours off for 4 days. Sleep will be in a camper van (kindly loaned and crewed by the famous Jane and Graham Porter). Vehicles, fuel and food will be provided – your time will be not be paid for. No big budget available I’m afraid.

All crew need to be available for the duration of the event which is from 9.00am on Wednesday 16th to the race end on the Sunday 20th. The cut-off time to finish the race is 8.00pm on the 20th (96 hours after the start). The obvious problem is that this involves 3 days during the working week apart from the Sat and Sunday.

So to the question – would any of you be interested/available?? (or would you know anyone else who would). This is a huge challenge for both riders and crew and in this event the crew are critically important to the success of the team. We also expect to have some mighty craic!!

If you want to know more about this you can get me on 086 8571008 at almost any time (or landline- 8608839 (work) / 8404598 (home) or feel free to email me.

Also, if there is anyone out there who is willing to give a bit of sponsorship to our team (in return for as much publicity as we can give you) please let us know. This can be sponsorship in the form of a few bob or some product which we could use on the event. If you want to give us loads of money we can even change the team name to include your business name.

    Regards
    Doug
