Insurance for Learners

I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum - I know there is a forum on insurance but I felt this question was more to do with insurance for learner drivers than for motor insurance in general.

I'm a 17 year old male who has had a Learner Permit for 1 month. According to the insurance brokers (Cornmarket), the cheapest price for insurance I can get (as a named driver on my mother's '98 Toyota Starlet 1.3L Petrol) is €1421 (with Axa).

My friend, who is also 17, says he is getting insurance with Hibernian Aviva for about €350 (albeit for 6 months) including 11 lessons and will get 6 months free if he passes his test the first time. Why is he getting such a cheap quote? It seems too good to be true - is there any catch to this type of deal or is it as good as it sounds?

    Thanks for reading.

350 euro would barely pay for the lessons, let alone insurance for 6 months. Now i don't know, but it sounds like your friend is telling porkies.
Why not ring Hibernian Aviva and see what cover they can give to learner drivers? Or at least ask your friend what policy he's on etc.

I've done this. Its not too good to be true.

You do the 11 lessons with the Hibernian Aviva driving school. You get 6 months ACCOMPANIED DRIVER cover from hibernian included, the reason being so you can practice your driving after the lesson! If you pass your test and you do the 11 lessons you get a good discount afterwards on normal insurance.

    I'd recommend it

Oh, it sounds good enough then. By accompanied driver cover, you just mean that you have to be accompanied by a full-licence holder (who had their licence for more than 2 years) when you are driving in order to be covered, right?

I asked my mother and she said when she was ringing the insurance brokers they said the catch with that policy was that she would need to switch to Hibernian Aviva as well (she's with Zurich now) and it would result in her being charged more than she usually would.

Yes and Yes. If whoever was to drive unaccompanied they are effectively uninsured.

And yes, the owner of the car must have a hibernian policy in order to do it

Both my sister and I are with Quinn. She's 20 and has a full license for a year now, she's had her own policy for 3 years (this is her third year) and her cover was about €500 this year.

I'm still a learner driver, and my policy (first renewal, 3rd party F&T) was about €750 this year (about €960 last year). I've never been a named driver on anyone's policy.

It's worth checking how much a policy would be with them online anyway. Costs nothing to look!

I got an online quote with Quinn. For me and my mother (with me added as a named driver) it would cost €895.33 (online price). It wouldn't let me pick Comprehensive as the car value was too low (approx €1200) so that's T.P. F&T without NCB protection or Windscreen cover. If I quote her on her own (without a named driver) it will cost €244, so that means that it would cost €651 for me, which is decent for a 17yo L.P. holder with no expierence!

That seems like a very good quote, compared to the €1421 that the Insurance brokers (Cornmarket) quoted - but I don't think Quinn are included in that anyway.

However, how difficult is it for my mother to switch her policy? She is with Zurich at the moment and her policy isn't going to be expired until 05/10. Will she get a rebate for the rest of it if she switches? Her current policy is Comprehensive, but Quinn won't let me choose that because the value of the car is too low. Why is this? If she switches I don't want her to have poorer-quality insurance.

26, learner, ~1800 for me on my housemates 1.8 laguna TPFT with FBD i believe.

if i pass, the cost will be irrelevant.

Do you get 50% off for provisional licence insurance cover if you do 10 lessons with Aviva driving school and no-one in your family is insured with Aviva?

or is it 50% off the lessons?
