Hi all. Hubby has a milestone birthday coming up. Has mentioned over the years that he would like to learn to play the guitar. I would like to buy one for him. I know nothing about music in general or Guitars in particular. What would be a good starting out guitar, not electric by the way:eek:, for an adult.

Any help would really be appreciated.

What kind of budget do you have?

Also, what sort of music does he like? (maybe name a few of his favourite bands/artists)

 He loves country music. Anything country really but esp Randy Travis and Garth Brooks.

As to budget I thought around €200 but I have no idea what that would get so give me leeway on that one.

And thank you very much for responding.

That looks to be a decent guitar for a starter :D That place is near the red cow roundabout

I think your budget of €200 is spot on for someone learning to play guitar, If he does like playing he will inevitably spend more, but not for a while yet

Ok, that gives us an idea then. For acoustic guitars, a lot of them would suit country. In terms of electric, a Fender Telecaster or similar copy would work. The "Tele" is pretty much the definitive country guitar.

I'm not big on acoustics so I can't give much recommendations there... but if you want to go for the electric route then the following guitar & amp would be a good choice. You'd need a few other bit's n' bob's but those can be had very cheaply (cable, strap and a handful of picks).

The guitars that have been posted are pretty good for the price,

two of my mates have this guitar, it sounds great and is really easy to play, which is very important when learning :).
worth the extra 75 I think. Also it can be plugged into an amp if ever needed.

Xmusic is great, only ever there once, i didnt want to leave! staff are friendly and helpful.

With regards to beginner guitars, you can't go too wrong with a Yamaha acoustic.
I purchased two yamaha acoustics when I was a beginner and I still bring one to my gigs as a back up.
Dont buy one over the internet or argos.
Go into a music shop and ask them to set it up for you.
Any decent music store will do this free of charge.

A tanglewood would also be a good choice for a starter and tend to be that price range. I would have to agree with steering clear of argos you can get better for the same price in a normal music shop.

I've actually been thinking of learning the guitar as well, I can play the violin but there aren't really as many venues that you can just whip it out without people looking at you like you're off your rocker.
I would prefer to buy used to save money. Are you looking at new guitars or used as well? Did you find any good spots where you could purchase a used guitar from?

adverts.ie (one of boards' sister sites) is full of used guitar bargains! :)

HI there - anybody know anything about McBride guitars in Waltons? I can't find any review etc - they look great and sound good - also price just outside OPs budget.

They're Walton's own brand guitar, probably made in China. I've never played one so I can't comment on how they are.

I baught a McBride guitar in waltons. Not a good guitar for a beginner. The action was way too high just murdered my fingures. They look good but play awful. There is a reason they are so cheap, just awful to play!

I agree with others that Yamaha or Tanglewood would be good choices.
However, most of those on offer will be steel-strung acoustics.
I would suggest he avoid only using a plectrum, get a good primer or teacher and learn to play finger-style properly, and for this a nylon-strung classical (Spanish) guitar is easier on the hands and also less noisy for others in the house! The hands thing is not a major issue,as one's fingertips soon get hardened, but it's easier to practice for long periods on nylon strings and since he's reached marriageable age without learning he's going to have to practice, practice, practice. Just a suggestion, and if he prefers to play the sort of gu itar he sees his favourite musicians play that could be a good motivator.
You can of course also put nylon strings on a steel-strung guitar.
One more thought -don't forget that an electric guitar can be played silently on earphones, e.g. at night, whereas an acoustic always makes a sound.
