great gifts for your OH

    I always find getting good gifts a challenge. At this very moment, i'm flirting with the dreaded foot-spa idea... So I got to thinking it would be good for us all if we compiled a resource of the best gifts or places to find them that we have exhausted ourselves but if we all share, we should all get something out of it as well as be able to help each other. Rough prices would help too... So, i'll start the ball rolling with this one;

New Moon Jewellery, George's St Arcade has an interesting array of jewellery you wouldn't see in a high street jewellers. Lots of unusual gemstones in various different settings. I have bought 2 gifts from here in the last couple of years. Both have been very well received but unfortunately i need to give it a rest, still it might be a useful place for some of you to have a look.
Price Range: In my experience anywhere from €50 to €200 depending on what you get but very affordable nonetheless.
Best points: Fairly unique stock, she wont bump into someone on the street wearing the exact same necklace and none of her friends or colleagues will be able to copycat her.
Worst points: Some of the stuff (or all, depending on how picky your OH is) looks a bit on the tacky side and could be confused for market stall rubbish.

Also, if you take someones suggestion, let us know how it pans out for you! It might help the rest of us earn some less-than-obvious Brownie points or avoid a nasty shiner! :D

I'm not great at buying great presents, but one thing that works really well in my experience is a hand made card. We always do them and some of the ones my mrs makes for me are really really good.

Some of the markets around Dublin, like around Bull Lane and the Loft in Powerscourt are good. Bring her along without saying anything about presents beforehand and see what catches her eye before you buy though. NCAD has a Christmas fair too, which can come in veeerry handy, especially as the cards, jewelry, prints, etc, won't be found elsewhere.

Are ladies allowed post here? :)

In my experience, the best presents are ones that involve going away for a break or short holiday, just doing something together - the memories are usually better than any present.

The best present my OH ever got me was for my 21st - he brought me quadding down in the Wicklow hills. I'm actually a really girly girl most of the time, so I was a bit dubious when he told me, but it was actually absolutely brilliant - a great experience! And we stayed in a lovely luxurious hotel too for the weekend, I definitely won't be forgetting that present in a hurry.

    The more personal/meaningful the better.

Ive always gotten the best reactions from things that really mean something to the recipient. It could be a soft toy that she loved as a child, her favourite perfume etc.
Its little things like that that show you have actually been listening to what she has been saying.:pac:

Also,Chaterpillars suggestion is top notch too.

Pandora bracelets - you buy the bracelet and then buy individual charms. They range in price from €30 upwards. Getting a different charm on special occassions can make it unique and not just any old piece of jewerly.

I like the idea of them. but they are down right fugly. Thankfully most of my female friends agree with me and to me they look like something aimed at girls rather then woman. just my opinion :o

+1 I'm afraid... I'd rather pick up something a bit unique and different at a craft fair than the Pandora bracelets - There's something a bit Argos-ey about them :o

Vintage jewellry seems to be big at the moment, although very hard to get at the mo. www.jegem.com do nice vintage. not sure if they ship to Ireland though. but this one is nice too http://www.shop.aliquoboutique.com/

Sorry... I'm a bit picky when it comes to 'flash' :o

If you're after vintage jewelry, hop on a flight to London, and down to the markets on Portobello Rd. on a Saturday - Include that into your weekend break away, along with a good meal that night, and you're sorted. In the good books for a month :D

Yup, I brought my gf to Rome for her 21st. Wasn't actually as expensive as you would think. We stayed in a self-service apartment which was dead cheap. This worked out well for both of us because I knew she would love all the lovey-dovey rubbish, the shopping etc. and I'm a huge history and classics geek so I got to geek out on the architecture, history and all that for a few days.

I prefer "Yer wan" or "D'quare Wan". I'm not sure it works if you abreviate it down to YW or DQW though.

Just be grateful he didn't use "the lack", like he would if he was really from Waterford. :p

I think that whole London thing is going to be her next big present. It'll basically be for me but she doesn't have to know that! Expect a PM about that site ChewChew.

Thanks ChewChew. I'm in the North East, so they're alll pretty handy to get to.

    Thanks again!!

Alfaz, if you are booking her some treatments book her a nice full body massage or hot stone massage and a facial! :D

I'll pop in here and say definitely the weekend away idea is probably always gonna be a winner (in my case anyway!). While 'things' are nice, they just are, and when you're working/busy all the time it's super to be whisked away for a night or two somewhere, without having to have done any of the prep!

Saying that, getting 'things' is nice too, especially if it's something unique and that she really wants!

I've a boyfriends birthday coming up soon but am short of cash.

I was thinking of a 16 GB MP3, which I can afford and to jazz it up, I was going to load all of his cds on it and get an fm transmitter for his car so he can listen to any album he wants off his MP3, his cd collection is full of scratched cd's which should rip cleanly to an MP3 via a laptop.

Do you boys think that sounds like a nice gift?

Yep, sounds good if he dosn't have an MP3!

Are ladies allowed post here? :)

I don't think ladies should be allowed here at all! Given that it's only ladies posting in The Ladies' Lounge ;)

    :pac:

I think a great gift is subjective. It simply depends on the type of person your partner is.
It's all about knowing what they'd like.
Are they into art? do they enjoy being pampered? Are they a fan of a particular fashion era?
Get a present that suits them and shows you know them - that's impressive to a woman.
Don't run into a shop, look at something, think "Oh, that'll do! Women like things like this" and buy it.
Make sure the gift shows some sort of sentiment and appeals to her, on a personal level.

Kilronan Castle hotel & spa looks good, we had already planned to go there and they have some great deals, one of them is a free night b+b for 2 people with any of 3 spa treatments being offered for €99. If you get 2, then you have 2 nights and a treatment each. The place looks very swish but just to warn you that the main body of hotel rooms are in a newer building next to the castle but you can upgrade to a castle room (forget how much this cost but it looks worth it) otherwise known as Junior Suite. I think the only better room is the Wedding Suite.
