Im eligible for the free tuition fees, I've applied for a grant, sent off the GF1 and FRS1, but there's still the Student Sports Centre charge of €77 and the Srudents Union of Ireland levy of €8 to worry about.

When and how do I pay these???

I received a bank giro form in the post which I went down and paid. I'm going into second year though so maybe it's different if you're only starting this year.

What's the story with the €1500 thing? I'm eligible for a grant but there's some things to sort out with that. Does it have to be paid before I can register?

The grant covers the Student Services Charge but unfortunately this has to be paid before you register, even if you haven't found out about your grant application. If you are successful in your application after you pay the €1500, it will be reimbursed.

I would advise contacting both your Local Authority and the Fees Office to explain the situation. They may either let you know of the decision on your grant earlier or the Fees Office could give you some 'grace time' for payment of the €1500.

Unfortunately, neither of the above are guaranteed. You should contact the SU Welfare Officer, Cormac Cashman on welfare@tcdsu.org as he is responsible for advising students on grant issues.

The €77 and the €5 USI Affiliation Fee and the €3 TCDSU Capitation Charge are, unfortunately, not covered by the grant; it only covers charges by the Department of Education & Science, not institution specific levies. These have to be paid at the same time as the Student Services Charge i.e. before you register. So while the grant will cover the €1500 if you're successful, it will not ocver that €85.

Again, contact the Welfare Officer on welfare@tcdsu.org. The SU does short-term emergency loans of up to €100 that have to be paid back within a month. I am not certain if they are open to new students pre-registration but if it's stopping you from registering (which non payment of the €77 will) they will at least consider it.

    Hope this helps!

Well I'm hoping that the grant I've applied for will cover the €1500 if it comes through. If it turns out they dont want to give me one, then I think the college will come after me looking for it.

The GF1 form I sent in said it was to let the college know that I want them to take the €1500 off the grant people, and that if it turns out I'm not eligible for a grant they'll want a "replacement fee" from me, whatever that is.... I think it might be the €1500 with a little dont-mess-the-college-around fee too.

Either way, I'm pretty sure that since I've sent the GF1 in they'll let me register without searching my pockets for money first

I was told by a woman at the fees office in Trinity, (and I'll hold them to what was said vehemently) that if I'm sure I'm eligible for the grant, that I wouldn't have to pay the registration fee, and just pay the €85.

This was my experience last year. I found the college to be flexible about this if the applicant is satisfied they will qualify for the grant.

Did you receive any confirmation that it was okay to forego the fees, so that you had nothing tyo worry about at registration?

Nothing formal, just a verbal assurance from the fees office.

If you are satisfied you meet the criteria for the grant there should be no problem.
