Phone line down, but still have internet!

For the second time in the last 3 months my landline connection has died, but the mystery to me is that I am still connected to my broadband. Last time, when I reported the fault to UTV, I was met with utter scepticism that I could still connect to the net. Once again, I must wait until Eircom come to fix the phone line - twice as long because they are not my providers. Believe me, I am OVERJOYED that I have the net and no phone rather than the other way round :pac:
But can anyone explain this weird anomaly and, seeing as it's happened twice now, what could be causing this repeating fault?

Strange, normally if your PSTN line has a fault this will also affect your ADSL.

    Count yourself lucky :)

Believe me, I do :) I just wish I knew what was wrong (right) with this so that it can be fixed permanently. I'd also like to know has anyone else ever experienced this as everyone seems to think I'm making it up

This can happen very easily considering the Broadband and phone signals are very different. The unfortunate thing is that 95% of the time, PSTN issues are interferrence and noise related (because of poor weather or wiring) and this always effects the Broadband.

Looks like this case is exchange related, count yourself lucky you can still socialise ;-) By the way, does your phone work when connected directly to your main telephone point with nothing else connected in the house (no BB, other phones, filters, Sky, alarms etc.)

Wire loose in the exchange between the voice card and MDF I reckon , happened me too and eircom refused to believe me .

They paid up 2 months free line rental for not fixing it on time :D

I previously had this problem, also with UTV, where the phone didn't work, but the DSL was fine. At the time the guy had an explanation for it, but I can't recall the term used. UTV reported it and it came back after a couple of days.

Seems like a telephone exchange fault, jumpering on the mdf or on idf.Adsl link in situ but exchange line diss. On this I assume that the line voltage (i.e 50v) is not in existance.

Is it that you just have a fault on the line and it needs repairing or has the line but cut/ceased and needs reconnecting

if its just a fault the BB can usally still work, ie, the line is still active, just needs to be repaired. The BB would usally only stop working if the line has been ceased, any thing attached to the line, ie BB markers, alarm systems etc can be knocked off and ceased with it.

    Hope that makes sence.

Thanks for the reply. The phone is dead as a dodo, I'm afraid, even on it's own. The broadband has started disconnecting now and again though, so I'm hoping I'll get it repaired soon. This was happening to me even more frequently over the last few weeks and I changed my modem router - maybe I didn't need to after all :(

This is the second time that this has happened, so I think there's definitely a fault on the line - and one which hasn't been properly repaired. I have nothing else on the line, no alarm systems or anything else that I'm aware of. It's a nuisance having to wait 4 days for Eircom though and they won't take a call from a UTV customer, which means I can't even query the problem or discuss possibilities. UTV will only log the fault and pass it on to Eircom, but if it happens another time after this I'll have to become a squeaky wheel somewhere :D

Same thing happened to me. When the technician came out he tracked the problem down to a loose connection. When fixed, my pstn service came back and I got a 10dB jump in dsl signal strength.

I have to compliment Eircom for the speed in which my line has been repaired - guy came this morning and fixed it :) He said something about 2 wires and a fault on the line. And yes, I now seem to have much a faster connection, so fingers crossed  I used to get consistently below 2mbs and it's now 2.5mbs!
Thanks to everyone for their input - it's good to know that I wasn't the only one and I can now point the sceptics to this thread :p
