Natural Confectionary Company Jelly sweets are good.....

When cycling 5+ hours (when is less strenuous that running) I also have used these to good affect -- I got sick of sugar too -- http://www.slipstreamsports.com/2008/07/16/cooking-with-allen-rice-cakes

however at the end of the day you need simple sugars............. og another good idea may be WhiteBread with Jam -- High GI There.

    Love the Clif Bars.

Chocolate Chip is great, Oatmeal Raisin and Walnut is yum too.

Tasty and sticky. I don't like dry bars.

Experimenting with the honey stingers (banana flavoured) gels at the moment. Haven't really much experience with other gels, so can't really compare. However, I find the HS'ers easy enough to take, and wash down easy with water. Gave me a great boost on my LSR last weekend. Within a few minutes I could feel the benefit.

They're pretty easy to make at home - save yourself the cost of shipping them from abroad :)

Where do you guys buy Clif bars? Online?

Nutrigrain Bars as well... both types. I like the Elevenses for stickiness.... and also the blueberry cereal bars....

Are the energy bars easy to eat on a run? I never got to try it, as thought all those solids in the tummy would cause cramp, as opposed to gels and fluids shoshing about.

Pro Bars are the best I've ever used. Don't know if you can get them here though. I've lived off the things for days at a time though. Much much much better than cliff bars

Funny how tastes differ. I got 2 free samples of them in Boston this year. They were the most vile tasting bars I've ever tried.

    True,

had a Clif bar a few years ago in the US - I had heard so much about them. I took 1 bite and dropped it in the bin - it was like a sugary turd.

I know it shouldn't make it onto the list of energy foods but on my (very rare) 24 mile runs (about 4 in the past 2 years). I stop at a petrol station and have a sugary (4 sugars) milky coffee and a Mars Bar Duo (2 mars bars). at mile 22. A rapid sugar, fat and caffeine fix!

It is the nutritional equivalent of viagra - I've had to stop myself at mile 24 - having been struggling from mile 18!

I can relate to that rush, I was on a 26M a couple of weeks ago and at 22M I was dehydrated and struggling, so I went into a shop and bought a bottle of water and a red bull. The red bull went down in one go and I bounded along for the last 4M. Was tempted to see how much further I could have run, but I didnt have the time.

Tempted to get a Red Bull at the same point on Sunday for the Longford Marathon, but dont fancy stopping into that shop again and losing time. Might have to reserve a couple of my water bottles for the rocket juice.

Taste wise or ability to digest or what?

(off topic - well done on Primal Quest - savage stuff! Loved seeing that Tricolour in the top 10!)
