Runners Nipple

    Hi all,

Yesterday I did a 9-10 mile run over the weekend

Got home, and quickly noticed I had runner's nipple!!!!
Yep - blood from my nipples, caused by chafing etc
I do NOT have a cotton t-shirt, but a proper Asics Running (anit-wicking) top.

    I've read people recommending;
    1. nipguard
    2. others bodyglide (some comments = great for nipples - but good on legs etc)
    3. others vaseline (some comments = need loads and need to re-apply for marathon)

    Opinions of these?
    What works for you all?

    Thanks

For evenry run I do I put a large plaster over each nipple and if its going to be wet or I'm doing a long run or tri I put some tape over the plasters just to be sure. It means I have two big bald patches on my otherwise extrmely hairy chest but at least I'm back to having two nipples (I lost an entire nipple earlier this year in connemara).

Oooh, it's a nasty one,i feel your pain, i was midway thru the burren half marathon when i felt blood on my hand, I looked down the blood had come thru my WHITE top, i looked like i had been shot!
Vasoline is your man man for the shorter runs but for anything longer a plaster will do the trick...OOhhh the memories of the shower afterwards!!

I had the same experience during the 10 miler in the park. Since splashed out on some nipguards but haven't used them yet

Bodyglide works for me. Careful of vaseline as it'll stain you t-shirt - for ever, no amount of washing will remove the stains.

I get this after 3 or 4 miles.Plasters is the way for me. Ive tried the lot. 2 small plasters. Bodyglide after 7 miles in the rain wares off. Vaseline i find fairly rubbish. Waterproof plasters from boots are good. Nip gaurds are a bit dear. If you are hairy chested lots of soap in the shower and it dosent hurt taking them off.

I was gonna go for a run the other morning and then i discovered a fry waiting for me cooked by my girlfriends mother. Said feck the run. Bit embarrased getting out of the pool later on that day to find i still had plasters on my nipples.

+ 1 for plasters. Vaseline doesn't last on a long run for me..

Heart rate monitor strap seems to eliminate the issue as well as your shirt then has something else to rub against rather than any nipples. I'd put som vaseline on as well on a longer run as well, but that is not due to any real issues, just habit mostly.

Anyone know where to get Nipguards, tried ebay etc no luck yet..

Also does anyone find the "technical" t-shirts often given out after races these days are worse for causing this problem than the old cotton ones? That is my experience anyway, either that or my nipples have just gotten more sensitive recently.

I also like the idea of the heart rate monitor strap as a protective guard! Will be giving that a shot in training to see if it actually stays in the correct place to do the business.

Where can one get hold of this around Dublin or the North East?

Bodyglide works for me. Had it on nips and soles of my feet for Gaelforce, no nipple chafing or blisters

    Fairly expensive at a tenner.

Tape them with white zinc oxide tape. Solid out but will rip all the hair off them.

I saw a fella out yesterday (Cork around lunchtime) in a white top with a bloody nipple........

My observation is that cross body arm swingers in technical tee shirts seem to suffer more than vest/singlet wearers.

Loosing a nipple?! That sounds grim

I buy them direct, depending on the $ they cost between €0.5 to €0.6 a pair when in bulk. Poastage is minimal. Yes, plasters are cheaper but I am quite hairy and in the past I tried to tidy it all up with a shave! In the end I looked as if I had two fried eggs on my chest.

The is insignificant compared to the misery. By the way, a drop of Lanolin on the injuried party works a treat. Check the mother's area of the chemist!

Cheers for that, my wife mentioned she might have something that would help alright, probably something like the above!

It was :D It eventually grew back but at about twice its previous size and about ten times more sensitive (for a few weeks I looked like I was very cold on one side only - much to my wifes hilarity). I lost my new monster nipple after my plaster came off during a very wet long run and it chaffed away again. This time it grew back a normal size. Now I don't even run a 5km without covering them.

I recommended Metholated spirits before on similar threads for prevention of blisters and sore nipples. A small bottle is cheap and last months. A few drops allowed to dry in followed by vaseline and your sorted. Always works for me but no one else has responded on the subject. Any views?

A few drops of metholated spirits on nipples sounds like it could cause runners nipple all by itself without any running.
