Getting contrasting information from Churches re Baptism/Confirmation certs....

Help please! We're getting married on the 28th May 2010 (just over 8 months away), and this week were trying to sort out our Baptismal and Confirmation certs.

But we're getting contrasting information on both. My fiance's church say both certs need to be dated 6 months or older, whereas my church are saying it needs to be dated within 6 months of the wedding, and neither side are budging on that stance!

Help! Which is right? Because we're pretty confused right now.

    Thanks in advance:)

Are you getting married in two churches?

    No.

I mean my fiance was baptised in a different church to me. So we are trying to pick up our certs from our respective churches.

Get the priests to ring each other and sort it out.

I'm hoping it's not the "<6months to the wedding" cos I have my baptism cert from my actual baptism, so it's dated in 1980!!!

This sounds very odd - it doesn't matter when those certs were issued. I thought the only one that had to be within 6 months was either the letter of freedom from your local parish, and/or the pre-nuptial enquiry form you fill out with your PP.

We got it cleared up. Seems the Baptismal cert and Confirmation cert SHOULD (but not required by the state) be dated within 6 months of the wedding date.

The secretary in my parish church had never even heard of this:rolleyes:

Supposedly if you have your original certs that's ok, but if you have to get new ones issued for whatever reason, they must be within 6 months of the wedding. (This according to the wedding/births/marriage dept. is to avoid bigamy).

    So problem sorted. Thanks again:)

Catholic marraiges are recorded in the church of your baptism. That church holds your records. You need to get your baptism cert for marraige within 6 months so they know you have never been married before in catholic church.

I don't see how the issue date of baptism or confirmation certs has anything to do with bigamy though, surely this would only affect the letter of freedom which says you're free to marry.

    Anyway, sounds like you're sorted.
