    Hey, I'm going into transition year in September and am very apprehensive about it because I've never really gotten involved in anything in the school. I mean I did the whole joiining sports at the start of first year but I soon quit because I'd made friends who didn't play sport and sport was on during lunch time so I didn't want to lose friends because I wasn't there...:o

    I think you have to do into the school show in my school, I can't sing or dance so I don't know how that's going to go...:o

    I have my work experience sorted for the first week in a local newspaper (such a relief, getting turned down in another place was nerve racking) Still have to sort out the second and third week during the year but that can wait. :pac:

    ANYWAYS, here's the main thing; the Young Scientist competition, I have no clue really what it is. I know that it's to do with science projects but it's just confusing me so much and I don't want to ask my friends because they've already paired up and stuff. So can anyone please explain it to me, I looked it up and know it has four headings but I'm still baffled? :confused:

    Anyone willing to help me understand the Young Scientist? I'm asking this question on here because all of Transition year in my school have been told to think about it.

    Ps. Sorry I got so distracted:):p

    Hello nicole,

    Having done the Young Scientist (YS) in Transition Year I can speak from personal experience.
    Essentially the YS is where 500 projects from all over Ireland (incl. NI) gather each year in the RDS for 4 days of fun and frolics with a bit of hard work thrown in also;).

    You or a group undertake to complete a project which you have a interest in for me on it was on the introduction of red squirrels to Dublin parklands. You should aim to start this project at the very beginnig of TY in order to get the most word done as possible.

    From memory there are 4 different sciences:
    1. Chemical & Mathematical, this has got to do with mathsy type of science such as fiberachi numbers.
    2. Social and Behavioural sciences has got to with behaviour and the social aspects of our life, such as listening to music while doing homework can reduce your concentration levels.
    3. Biological & Ecological- has to got to do with nature and animals
    4. Technlogy--- setting up an online radio station.

    Eh...if you do get accepted to the RDS you'll be judged by professionals in the field of science you've choosen. THey'll ask questions such: Why did you choose this project? Did you find anything startling? They also ask basically how you did the project etc;

    Eh..............any thing else??? hmmm.... I can think of anything else but if you've got any more questions, just post them and I'll try and answer them, if I can.

    Hope that was of some help and good luck!

    Hi, thanks for writing back and helping me to understand the competition a lot more, I was freaking out during the summer because we were all told to think about the Young Scientist and have ideas, not many people do:)

    I still don't really have any ideas for it but at least I get it now:pac:
