    Hi there,

Do any of you here play for Ashbourne? I'm asking because I recently moved to Ashbourne and I'm desperate to start playing rugby again! Problem is I'm mighty unfit and fat as fook so it's going to be an uphill struggle to get back to full fitness!

Anyway, does anybody know if they have a J5 or J4 team? On their website I can only see J1, J2 and J3 teams and I'm afraid that level is going to be a little bit too advanced for me right now...

    Any help greatly appreciated! ;)

    Ashbourne is a great club.

They play in the regional leagues. The J3 of which would be slightly higher than J4 in Dublin. J3 is the lowest level in the regional leagues and you'd be well able for it.

If I lived out there I'd be up in a flash.

You'd be mad not to go up.

Thanks Tim! That would explain why I couldn't find any J4 / J5 information...

I'm meeting the president of the club at 8pm this evening to have a chat about joining the club so hopefully he won't laugh when he sees me! lol :D

Lovely pitches up there , played a final there last year and despite smelling of farmland it was easily the best pitches id played on throughout Ireland.

Last time I played them, I got (unprovoked) stamped on my face and was lucky not to receive any permanent sight damage...so theyre a great club!

Pitches 1 and 2 are simply superb (it cost close to €30,000 a year mind you)! Just came back from there now... The J1's were playing against Dundalk. Some facilities they have!!!

First training on Thursday evening! I can't wait but I'm also terrified I'm so unfit!

Dundalk are in a division above I believe? Anyway, when I left Dundalk was winning with ease.

Hey Steffano. I played Tag in Ashbourne over the Summer and was talked into heading up to training. I knew a few of the lads anyway and found the training grand; The 2 guys really know their stuff.

Most of the lads are sound enough and I didn't sense there was much eliteism or anything like that.

It did seem though that a lot of the 1st Team was missing compared to last year but this was pre Season...

Anyway Soccer is back so quitting the rugby Training. The J3's start up soon and from what I understand its just pitch up on a Friday and see how it goes. The lads were saying its easy going enough as long as you have the basics down.

There usually is circuit training down in the Community centre on Saturday mornings which may help your fitness?

Stev_o Towns cup final Boyne Tullamore?

They seemed pretty easy going to me as well yesterday evening. And their President, Rod Cosgrove, is very approachable and friendly! I can't wait to start training tomorrow!

As for the fitness, I'm going to take up cycling again (running ain't good for my knees cos I'm too heavy for them!) and start going to the gym after work also (got a membership in July '08 and never set foot there since!).

    Can't wait!!! :D

Best of luck with the training. Maybe you could post in the 'So I started playing rugby...' thread if those Stillorgan boys dont mind hi-jackers!

Cycling (IMO) is the best way to keep shape - I think its the most natural way of building acceleration and leg strength, so you may run through a few gaps and surprise yourself soon enough ;)

I think its really interesting how Irish demographic trends have affected the success of Leinster Junior clubs lately (just look at Barnhall, Navan and Cill Dara). Thats not taking away the hard work of the members of course. But I think Ashbourne seem to have the resources and demogrpahics to ensure a bright future. Maybe at the detriment of my home club but oh well!

dont forget naas... definitley the influx of people to these areas has helped but the large amounts of cash floating around these didnt hurt either!

I didn't go to training on Thursday... Had a nasty migraine in the morning and it's still soare today...

Will have to wait for Tuesday now... Not a bad thing in retrospect! I can now get 4 days of cycling in! ;)
