First things first - sorry about the ridiculously long thread title! Dunno what got into me there...

Anyway, have a 01 Avensis, 2l diesel. 130k. In good nick but the clutch is gone.

So, time to get a new one... I would prefer not to bother getting the clutch done as it would only hold me up getting the new car.

I figure I'm willing to spend €10k on a new car (plus whatever the old car can bring)... Would like a 2l diesel automatic saloon if possible...

If you were me (except you knew something (anything!) about cars) - what would you do??

    Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Also, was told me a mechanic that a car that is 08 or younger, is much much cheaper to tax? - Is this true of all models or just certain models...

Most diesels from 08 on would be cheaper to tax. Trading in your current car with a dodgy clutch would mean you get SFA for it. If I were you I'd get a clutch in it, NCT it and sell privately. Then you will have a slightly bigger budget and you can avail of a decent cash discount in the process on the new car, although, I cant think of any 08 diesel automatic saloons that you would get around that price range so you may have to go a couple of years back

I sold my car recently - clutch needed to be done and NCT was due. Didn't bother doing either but put it in the ad and got more for it that I was quoted for trade in

It's actually NCT'd til Jan 2011 so no worries there... I know nothing about cars, but - clutch apart - it's a grand motor. Someone who is handy with cars would keep it running forever...

Isn't there a minimum scrappage offer at some garages? I would also consider buying up North but would that knock the trade-in option on the head?

Check out the rates on http://www.motortax.ie for pre and post July 08 cars. Then http://parkers.co.uk should give you the emissions for the car you are looking at. I'd be surprised if a post July 08 diesel car isn't cheaper to tax than an earlier one.
