Its a 2.5" drive, so it's powered by USB and doesnt need a power supply. If they say it does, its a typo.

Good price for a 500GB 2.5" drive also. Nice deal.

Looking at the second picture they have on the site there's only a usb port on the drive itself, from reading another site I found via google it seems to have a double-ended usb port that draws power from a second usb port...

Just wondering does anyone know if I could take the drive out of this and use in a ps3 or laptop?

Some of these drives come with a y-cable, in case a single USB port can't supply it with enough power for spin-up. Usually you'll only hit that problem with old laptops.

You'd have to find out what kind of drive was inside. Some of these external USB drives use a higher-than-normal 12.5mm drive (instead of 9.5mm) which won't fit in most laptops (or the PS3). If you got the model number for the internal drive you could find out.

I think that it may have two usb cables, one to transfer data, one to power it seperately....bit useless really if thats the case! Philips have ones released like that as far as i know..

I've had 2 iOmega hard drives die on me in the space of 6 months last year - beware! I'd definitely never buy one of their products ever again.

Same model or a different series?

Thanks, but after a bit of googling I could only find the following info from iomega site - not a lot of detail.

Would this work ok with a PS3? Have a load of video files i'd like to be able to play through it. Will the PS3 be able to power it?

Have to echo this. Was a big fan of Iomega for a long long time but recently the quality of their hard drives has really gone to the dogs.

I had a 320 gb external HDD die on me a few months ago and the 500 gb drive I purchased to replace it has started making some strange noises which are usually an indication that the Grim Reaper is on his merry way...

Kharn - Was it a head crash or circuit board failure that killed your HDD's and did you ever manage to recover anything (presuming you hadn't backed up that is).

I've had my iomega hard drive for the last 2 years and I've never had a single problem. I hope they haven't gotten worse in recent months

Damn, just bought a 500GB Iomega external drive yesterday in Peats, Rathmines for €109.99. Thought I was getting a bargain! The one I got isn't exactly the exact same model but very similar, they also had 2TB ac adapter powered drives but can't remember the price. Slightly off topic but does anyone know when we might see 1TB USB powered drives in the shops?

Let us not forget that this "Bargain" is from Pixmania, one of the worst e-tailers in the business.

Link. Should hit the streets in a few weeks, is already on WD website. It is 100% a 12.5mm drive, so won't fit in your PS3 or most laptops.

I bought this one on Amazon yesterday for eu73.80 with free postage as I am in the UK next week and will collect from the site I am visiting.

Would it work though just to transfer data to the PS3 not as an actual hard-drive to put in it

Sony shop in St Stephen's Green Centre selling the 1TB version of this hard drive for €90.

    Might interest someone...

You guys are confusing these portable USB-powered hard-drives with the larger 3.5" desktop ones.

They are different products. The 3.5"-based drives are cheaper per GB, but much bulkier and require their own AC adaptor. The portable drives as per the thread title are much smaller and run straight off the USB port.

was just about to purchase the Iomega on pixmania.ie when i spotted this:

    SEAGATE Momentus 5400.6 Hard Drive (ST9500325AS) - 500 GB

is this the same thing? wonder which would be better?

That one would require a power cable.

I knew it wasn't USB powered, I just wanted a good 1Tb drive at a good price.

Iomega have no connection to the Hard Drive inside. It could be Toshiba, Seagate, Western Digital..

You can find out quickly enough in Windows. The Hardware tab in the drive properties will usually show the manufacturer and model number.

I could understand if the caddies had Seagate drives, wouldn't touch the Seagate drives 'Made in China', with a barge pole, specially any high density drives.

TBH after all the mixed reviews about the reliability of IOMEGA, id be more incline to pay the little extra and go for

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-WDME5000TE-Essential-Midnight/dp/B001GT7F84/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1251448581&sr=8-14

Was checking them out in PC world recently and they looked awesome, ridiculously portable, and seemed to be well made (not to mention PC world were selling the 320Gb version for €90).
