I am just wondering if anyone here is on the FAS Work Placement Programme? I am not eligible for it yet as I am not six months unemployed. I am going to apply for the Graduate placements as I have a Level 8 degree.
I think it is dependent on companies taking on someone registered with FAS but there aren't many companies hiring at the moment.

Just to let you know, if you are eligible for this and get a job, the only renumeration you get is the social welfare you pick up.

You do not get any wages from the company. To a certain degree, I have no issue with this, however, when you take into account the expenses associated with working i.e. travel, you will find it harder to live on the weekly social.

The idea is for a 6 month placement but, they don't seem to have taken into account you may get a job in the mean time.

There are some interesting roles being advertised already.
Really though, even 100 a week token from the company on top of the JA would make a huge difference to the individual in terms of covering travel.

I'm on a list for a certain placement and if offered it I would take it. However, if I was offered a job while on it I would have to take that. They company should pay a bit more to cover travel and lunches etc. There should also be the promise of a job if the company are happy with you etc.

Yeah I know that the company don't pay you. I agree with all of the above, the company should definitely cover the travel costs if the person they employ has to drive a long distance to work. I live in the countryside and it would end up costing me a bit in fuel if I had to travel to work if I got a job under this scheme.
How does it work if you get offered a job while on the 6 months placement? Can you just up and leave?

If I get the scheme before I get a job and am offered a job while on it I will just up an leave. How could they possibly expect someone to turn down a job so they can work for free. I'm sure there would be a list of others who could take your place on the scheme.

If anyone has any official info on it I would love to know more. Fas seem to know very little about it.

The main complaint I would have about this scheme is that you work a standard 37/39 hour week for €204 per week but you arent allowed to take up a part time job while in it.I think thats vey unfair.

People taking up these placements are obviously mad to get into the workforce or get work experience so why shouldnt they be able to subsidise themselves with a bar job or what ever? They arent some bum happy to sign on and do fcuk all so there should be allowances made.

Plus what happens if (nay when) the job seekers allowance takes a hit in the budget.Even if it takes a 20% hit, thats a huge amount, especially if,as others have said, you are travelling every day to and from the job.

IMO its something that really needs to be addressed.
