    Yes but why would you want an alternative... Word is already free and comes with every version of windows. notepad2 is also good. Open office is heavy weight and not really that easy to maintain format wise with some files.

    QJot is very similar to WordPad. Can be run off a USB stick.

    What do you need done, that WordPad cannot do?

    Notepad++ is good. used it in college a bit, because it lets you work in programming syntax very neatly (with color highlighting) without having to install a multi-GB compiler on whatever machine youre using at the time. Very lightweight. Very handy.
