    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of the weekly timetable of lectures in the Diploma course in the King's Inns.
What days lectures are on, when they are on etc.

I know this must be on the website somewhere, but I can't find it.

    Thanks.

Not really, I want to see what time lectures are on during the week, not when the term is.

    Thanks anyway.

The lecture times for the forthcomming academic year are provisionally given as 17:45-20:00 Mon -wed,17:45 - 21:00 thursday and saturday morning until 12:00!

    Hope that helps!

I sincerely hope you have applied if you intend to secure a place for this year as the deadline was months ago! They are pretty strict also! They expect you not to mess around when paying your fees either! trust me i am enrolled for this year!

Actually, they aren't that strict about it at all - they just like to pretend they are.

If you're interested in doing it and have missed the deadline it's still definitely worth giving them a ring.

I already did that, and got offered a place today.

I have to try and work out finance before I accept though.

    Good stuff.

If you have any questions then feel free to fire them my way, I just finished it.

The diploma is a very well thought course.

Just bare in mind it's a very demanding course so do, where possible, keep up on top of the topics. Try not to let more than a week go by without studying. If you fall into the ''catch-up'' stages, then you're on an upward battle

But do enjoy the course. The lecturers are brilliant, the buildings are great and the facilities are very very good

Incidentally while browsing the academic term dates for next year I noticed that the Dip dates for Year 1 and Year 2 are stated as running until Friday 18th December, as opposed to a Thursday - I wonder if this means they are going back to five nights a week or if it's just an error?

If they aren't changing it back then I still think the new timetabling they have for the Dip is a terrible move.

As far as i'm aware your one marcella told me that they werent gonna go back to five nights a week and that tutorials would be on sat!

    I have a few q's lads

1- how strict are they on attendance on the dip? Having studied 8 out of the 12 subjects already a lot of it is going to be repetition for me so some tutorials would be unnecessary.

2- what are the teaching materials and resources like up at the inns?

3- do they run moots in which dip students can take place. It'd be cool to keep it up rather than lose all that i've learned. I find it keeps me on my toes

Yeah, apparently they’re sticking to four nights plus Saturdays (nasty). “Your one” Marcella would eat you alive if she heard you calling her that ;)

I did the “old” system of the Diploma which finished in May so I’m open to be corrected on this by someone who just finished first year, but from talking to a few of them it seems that you can get away with missing a fair few lectures (get someone to sign you in), but they are fairly picky about you attending your tutorials and nobody can sign you in for them. Even though you’ve done most of the subjects before, different lecturers can examine in really different ways, particularly in the Inns, so it would be worth your while attending as many as possible even if they weren’t uptight about it.

Every lecturer in the Diploma now has to give a manual to accompany the lectures. I think there are additional materials given out in class which gives you another incentive to go. The quality seems to be generally good; we nicked a few of the first year’s manuals for our entrance exams as we did the same subjects and they were pretty comprehensive. As with every course though there are some subjects which are better than others in terms of materials!

Yes, all the mooting competitions are open to Degree and Diploma students alike. The Maiden’s Moot is the first one and starts in October. Then the Brian Walsh Memorial Moot is after that which is generally a higher standard but still open to everyone. The International Moots (Jessup, Telders, Higgins Memorial Moot) are also open to all years.

Were you one of the one's subjected to the speech of singing someone else's name on the sheet is akin to prostitution?

    lol

Haha, yes. Didn't stop us though! I'm not sure if the current crop did it with the abandon that we did though. To be honest, they didn't seem to be as narky with us about attendance in general as they are now. Nobody was ever summoned to any meetings or anything like that, anyway.

Out of interest, have the two of ye both taken the exam for the BL or do you intend to in the future? If so, would you say that its helped you in anyway being down there for an extra two years?

I'm really excited about going there now, having done the auld masters already i reckon i'll be pretty well placed to get decent enough grades. Is it true there are prizes for the top marks in every subject? What does one get? a few book tokens at the end of the year would make for a nice incentive to do well ha ha!

You've done a masters and are also doing the Diploma? Do you not have a primary law degree (conceivable I guess).

There are advantages to being in the Inns before the BL degree, the main one is knowing the rules and the place. Effectively, also the bulk of the Diploma go on to do the degree, thus you will know most of your year in the degree year and have a slight advantage over the mix of college grads who come in etc.

There is prizes for Family and Constitutional law exams. The prizes are far from book tokens let me tell you.

    Tom

I echo what Tom said about the advantages of doing the diploma before the degree. That being said though, there are also advantages to doing a law degree beforehand; apparently people who have come from academic law degrees have superior legal research skills to those who did the diploma (although that may change now with the introduction of a significant coursework element to the diploma).

Regarding prizes, in addition to Family and Constitutional there are also prizes for the overall highest mark over two years, Evidence, Contract, and Criminal. Some of these have only been introduced in the past year. And yes, the prizes are very substantial, not a book token in sight! :)

No my primary degree wasnt in law but contained a lot of modules in it! which is really annoying considereing i attended the same classes as the students who's degree is recognised! Highlights the inequalities in the system!!!!

Lads just want to take the time to say thanks to the three of ye for taking the time to reply to this thread.

On the research side of things i did a months work experience on a rather high profile case there in january and quickly found out how bad they were. Although halsbury's is now my all time favourite book/series!

Minister - whom did you speak to in KI? I enquired about late applications yesterday and they told me the course is full-up, but that if by any chance they had any cancellations they would let me know (seemed surprised that I would even dare to ask at this stage!) Anyone know whether there is usually a drop-out rate during first few weeks (which might help me obtain a place)? Also, what are the relative advantages of doing the KI diploma over the DIT one (which is significantly cheaper and which would presumably still serve as suitable preparation to sit the KI entrance exams)?

    Thanks.

    Thanks.

DIT one is not suitable for KI examinations

Tbh, they had a holding list, but yesterday is very, very, very late (and I was just very, very late). Not sure what your chances are.

EDIT: Whay degree di you get, and what level degree?

Thanks for the response - good to know re. DIT. Another friend also pointed out that KI has a more social aspect which helps make up for the long hours...And yes, the extra 'late' in there could make all the difference - will just have to wait and see whether the gods that be choose to smile on me...Primary degree was English and French (1st) and MA in European Studies, plus part of an LLM in human rights (abandoned it towards the end as got a job back in Dublin).

Yes, there will probably be a few drop outs in the first few weeks. As far as I know if you drop out before a certain date you get a percentage of the fees back.

Well I spoke to Marcella again yesterday and no joy - last week she still hadn't heard back form all the students so thought there might still be a possibility of a place, but apparently all the students have now registered since Thursday eve:( So only hope is if somebody drops out during first few weeks (though obviously not ideal situation). So if you hear of anyone considering that, please let me know!!!

Good luck with the course anyway.

Well I'm in Dip 2 now and I can tell ya they haven't gone back to 5 nights a week, the reason why we'd be in on a Friday is because of a bank holiday Monday we had off the previous week or something similar - they like to make sure we don't miss out :p

    In answer to your questions...

1 - attendance is only taken at tutorials, but I know this year they are getting a little annoyed about poor attendance. Even if you have done the subjects before it's worth going to lectures / tutorials, I have that on advice from people in the same situation

2 - amazing, manuals for every course which are aaalllmost enough to get you through the exams, very user-friendly. Library is lacking a little in books but not to the extent where it would affect your work

3 - Yep, maiden's moot (although only for people who have never mooted before), Brian Walsh moot (internal competition), and then Jessup and Telders international competitions. You can also get involved in the debating end of things.

    Hope that helps :)
