I remember reading in November last year that Dermot Ahern was to publish a bill regarding public begging. Does anyone know if the bill was published or passed??

Yea, I went looking for it and couldn't find it. I suspect it may have fallen victim to the economic and banking crisis. The Vagrancy Act or some form of act needs to be brought back in. I for one, get quite nervous when hoards of (generally, but not limited to) Romany folks swarm the exteriors of some of Dublin's better drinking spots.

When they force a baby into your face, they can be covered under the Child Care Act, but it's a right pain in the face for a Garda as I think that the HSE have to be called etc. and the usual claims of police abuse follow. It's frankly a 2/3 Garda exercise.

PS: I could be wrong in that, but the Bill is not on the Oireachtas side or Justice.

Yep, I couldn't find any bills so I'd say it's been swept under the carpet or put on the back burner.
I spoke to a friend earlier in the week and he has a problem with beggars coming onto his business premises and begging/intimidating customers. Apparently the Gardaí are pretty powerless as there is no law against begging. I don't think trespass would be a runner either as there is no intent to commit an offence (according to the Garda he spoke to)
