Swiss demand Google map switch-off

Switzerland today demanded Google remove any image of the country in its "Street View" maps claiming they broke strict privacy laws. Hanspeter Thuer, federal data protection commissioner, said the pictures failed to obscure people's identities.

"Numerous faces and licence numbers weren't blurred or were done so inadequately," he said.

Why don't they stop it here?

It wouldn't surprise me if scumbags are using Google maps to locate high powered cars, industrial plant equipment etc for joy riding and carying out hole in the wall bank robberies etc.

It's not like google is showing anything private. You can see all the high powered cars and industrial plant equipment just by getting in your car and driving around. If anything google streetview could slow down thieves because the information on it could be outdated and the plant equipment could be gone by the time they got there.

    Google can do anything.

Even crime. Niche market and all that.

Well first of all the Swiss are notoriously reclusive.

Second, any plant or high powered car or golden garden gnomes you have that can be seen can just as easily be seen by driving down your street. To claim that Street View will lead to increased crime is just hysteria.

They're bang on, who died and made Google "Lords of all they survey"?

Nice pun slipped in there. ;)

Mama always told me that one day my proudly waved great big bare arse would grace the site of a huge scary international mega web company.

Looks like the prophecy is about to be fulfilled.

    Yeay!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is Switzerland not the place where all the car registrations are listed on a publicly accessible site to help you grass your neighbours up for double-parking?

Is it actually possible in this or any other European state to ring some place up and get private details based on an address or a cars license plate number?

It's anecdotal but I'm trying to find a reliable reference.

I believe every time the Gardai make a vehicle registration inquiry they have to give a reason for doing it. ie stolen, tax, insurance etc.

If you know certain people working for the council, fire service etc they can also have access to these, cars blocking drains fire hydrants etc etc. I knew a guy that was mad into cars, if he saw something lying up that he wanted he would contact his mate who worked in the council to get details of who owned it. This may have all changed now with traceable digital records and access restrictions.

The authorities are very slow to give out any details in this country unless there was an accident involved or unless you are registered with the Westlink toll plaza. :pac:

Maybe they are worried likely we will see the like of U2 or a TD emerging from one of their banks!
    SNAP! Caught on camera!
They can't say that however and come up with another reason. LOL

I hate these filthy neutrals. With enemies you know where they stand but with neutrals, who knows? It ... sickens me.

You need sensitivity training. Such vile discrimination against the neutered.

I saw one car driving around the Dalkey/Dun Laoghaire area while I was driving myself.

I followed it around for about 5 minutes. If anyone opens street view and notices a guy in a silver Focus that seems to be everywhere around that area, then, umm, hello!
