Cardboard built quality, dodgy electrics, blown head gaskets, thin steel from Russia I think (part of an agreement from when Fiat sold Moscow the 124 production line).

    They look loverly though.

As with alot of Alfa (and Italian) stuff they have some great engineering and design coupled with astoundingly poor build quality.

from memory I think they had de-dion rear suspension, inboard rear disks and near 50 - 50 weight distribution.

Also the GTV had one of the best sounding engines every produced imo in 4 or 6 format.

I am open to correction but the GTV6 looked slightly different ( better ) it has a bonnet bulge.

They handle pretty well - hence they were raced alot and for some reason I have seen 2 about Dublin this week - one on Pearse st in traffic and one ( i'm fairly sure ) in the window of a small car dealer in Windy Arbour

Rust is a killer on these, thankfully it doesn't hid itself that well. Inner wings and lower wheel arches most likely to rot.

Engine's are bulletproof. All alloy engine so needs to be warmed up fully before flooring it. If you blow the head gasket its mostly likely your own fault.

Complex enough drivetrain compared with most of the stuff on the road back then. Dedion rear suspension also contains the clutch/gearbox/diff assembly. That's right, clutch is at the rear so the propshaft runs at engine speed.
If balanced correctly and decent donuts fitted it should be vibration free. Inboard rear brakes are a pain in the ass to adjust.

Gearshift takes a bit of getting used too as the long linkage can give a vague feeling particularly if the bushes are worn.

Never had an electrical problems on mine.
The 4 pot sounds good, but the V6 is a whole other animal altogether :D
