    Hi,

I am training for the half marathon in Dublin but I have hit a hurdle since the 10 mile last week. My hamstrings have tightened up and this in turn is causing the illotibial band to rub off my knee. I am in agaong after 4 miles now and I should have run 10 miles on Sat.

Can anyone recommend someone in Galway for a good sports massage??

    Thanks!

    You could try Ian Egan.
He runs with my club, and a few colleagues go to him for a massage.
I haven't been to him yet, but if my ITBs are still bugging me when I start back training in a couple of weeks, I'll be paying him a visit.

He keeps telling me he can sort me out :D

I go to Caroline Reynolds in Montpelier Phsiotherapy, herself and her partner do physio for the Galway football team so they know how to treat sports injuries and do proper massage. They're at the end of Sea Road near the Crescent. 091 588362.

Thanks for your replies. Ian Egan is a runner himself so I may book an appointment with him.
ITB is a nightmare to deal with as you need time and patience. I don't have either at the moment as I am trying to get in as much mileage as possibe before the 1/2 marathon. It is very frustrating when all the advice I get suggests that I cut back on the miles and rest:eek:

Good luck spurscormac with the comeback.

    Thanks Zzippy for the referral.

Ian Egan is the man. He sorted out my ITB with just one session, and also gave me a good stretch to do for it as well. I haven't had it since.

Oh golly we're all on the ITB at the moment, discovered mine at the weekend. I have been advised to consider rolfing, unlike physio it seems to deal with alignment of your body. Do a google on it and read the tesimonials from other athletes, read some wonderful things about it, and apparently theres a very good guy here in Galway

I can recommend a good therapist from the amber healing centre in kilcolgan.
Its deep tissue but it will really stretch out those calves and hamstrings.

Can the ITB be cleared up in 1-2 sessions , I know its wide open quesion and depends on level of problem but like most recent posters on this I have discovered my ITB , did some damage on gaelforce and still ran a half marathon last Sunday, visited a physio locally Monday (seemed good) and she recommended staying off it for a week at least and letting pain be my guide.... Had notions of DCM but I had thought the ITB issue would have had me out for months (well after achill roar sat).

Can I expect to be running on it seriously in 1-2 weeks ?

I too have suffered terribly with ITB, often wondered what it would be like to finish a race without pain! Went to a guy that was doing sports massage at one of the races I was at, I just did 2 half marathons a month apart with no pain on the day or during training, his name is Darren Macfarlane, located on Abbeygate Street, he is really good.

Check out this thread where the same query was posted in 2008. There are quite a few names on it.

Janeann Healy who is a serious marathon runner recently did some research on ITB injuries. She might be worth a visit. Her details are on the thread.
