Hey all, just got a hp netbook today I am so happy with it. (so far anyway). It's just so neat and tidy, very comfy to type on and easier to get into bed than Jordan (now now, Jordan is the nickname of my 15.4 inch dell). Anybody else got one, I went for the vista one in the end and not the xp. Well, that's it for now....yeah me!

Does it play HD video? Or do any netbooks really play HD video?

missingtime, there's a HP netbook with a special card that can handle it.

Unless youre hooking it up to a TV I dont see why any netbook needs to play HD video. On a 10" screen, you wont differentiate between say, 720p and 1080p.

I knew you, YOU, would say something about it, heh..

[I bet Overheal will say something snippy]

That HP has marginally better resolution, it also allows a user to play the format, regardless, without having to re-encode for use.

Not so much the quality as such just will the processor handle it. When I stream HD on youtube or apple trailers my current lappy chuggs along. Admittedly its 5-6 years old but I'm just a tad concerned cos I'm in the market for a netbook

Nice. Might have a look at one of these myself.

ps: Getting into bed with Patrick Moore would be easier than getting into bed with Jordan ;)

Well if I store all my films in HD for playback on my TV then I'd have to have a second copy as SD resolution just for playback. A netbook capable of HD playback would mean I only need the one copy.

That I wont contest. If you plan on using it for TV hookup by all means. A Netbook with an HDMI is infinitely more useful than any of these other options at the moment, like WDTV.

I was half thinking of the option actually. I kinda want something permanent for my TV, and I do need a print server, and a file server; something to hook all my external drives up to. A netbook can handle all of that, lets be perfectly honest (well a high end Netbook, for the HD).

Ooh, and I could get one of these. Hmm.

    Im starting to plot now.

What I meant was I have a HTPC hooked up to my HDTV. I can't use those HD videos on my netbook so I need a HD and SD version of the file. Wasted space on my hard drive.

Yeah but its a difference between putting 4gb or 700mb on the netbook. Which is more limited for disk space, the HTPC or the Netbook, tbh?

Unless theres a quick way to scale a copy down when you Sync it with the netbook. That would be interessting. Windows Movie Maker might do this.

I just copy over the film I want when I want it. But that still means I have to have two copies of the film on my external hard drive for permanent storage. If I had a netbook capable of HD playback I'd only need the 1 copy of the film and thus saving me storage space.

yeah im figuring out here that HDMI outs must be a rare or null-existant feature on netties yet.

Watch out for the HDMI Minis though.

Some have them but aren't capable of HD playback. Handy for watching SD stuff on your HDTV (because HDMI is a hell of a lot more common on TVs than vga) but really is a pain that they can't do HD playback.
