It's very different. I suppose it has a little crime scene investigation but don't come in here after 3 episodes saying its boring!

Watch a full season, see what you think.

For me The Wire has some comparisons to Homicide: Life on The Street, The Shield and The Sopranos. It has the same type of long spanning story lines from the Sopranos e.g. stories evolve over entire series'.

It has the grittiness of Homicide and the impact and punch of The Shield. If you like your TV eposides wrapped up with a nice little conclusion or cliff hanger in 60 minutes, The Wire isn't for you. Each series builds on top on each other with multiple plots lines and character development. The language used is from the street and takes some getting used to. But it's this auethenticity, deep engrossing story and character development that makes The Wire the quality show it is. It requires patience to get into. But it rewards that patience in spades.

I'm a huge fan of 24. Great show. But for me, The Wire is definitely better. But it takes some time to get into. If after a few episodes, you think "This is boring. This is crap" etc, finish the rest of the first season anyway. If you still don't like it after that, then its not for you. Not a bad thing, different people like different shows. But if you haven't watched The Sopranos, or Oz, The Wire is going to be pretty different to what you normally watch, especially 24 and CSI.

Give it a try anyway, it is a really great show once you invest a little patience in it.

CSI is about as far away from The Wire as you could possibly get, The Wire is intelligent, well written, amazingly acted, has fleshed out characters you care about, genuine shocks and surprises as the series unfold and never manages to lose track of where every character is going even though there's at least 60 (thats probably a safe estimate) characters that all have a story arc, its really a miracle of tv writing, CSI is none of these things, its lowest common denominator tv, glossy, unrealistic, awfully written dross.

The Shield and The Sopranos are about as close as you could get to the wire on tv

you really should, anyone I've ever given it to has gotten hooked, please dont dismiss it after 3 episodes because "nothings happening", its all a buildup, from the very first scene everything matters

It's really shown when Mcnulty says nicely done to stringer in the very first episode after the court case then when
stringer says nicely done to mcnulty after the final court case in the first season after the cas is brought in

    hey,

watched the first 3 episodes and i must admit that i am really enjoying it although the odd time i do find the lingo a bit hard to follow. Yes it is completely different to CSI and 24 but i think it is alot more engaging.

i really see what Dubhthamlacht means when he says its like the soprano's.
