By contacting AIB and asking them to investigate it.
They've more resources to track them down.

    "locked until identity confirmation"

Well anyone who doesn't smell something's wrong and cop the scam, with that prize piece of grammar, deserves to be cleaned tbh.

Just enter a load of shíte details over and over to annoy them :D

Honestly, I don't think it's worth the bother to actually report this, considering that I don't have any information that would be of use to the Gardaí, beyond a spam email on Gmail.

It'd just be a waste of Garda time to contact them over this at this stage.

I forwarded it to gmail admins as usual

Not really. They have an IT unit too, they'll report the fraud to the company that hosts the site and they'll either disconnect them or report them to local police.

That's what AIB will do if you report it to them

Just ignore it, i've got them supposedly banks that don't even have a presence in this country.

Sent it to alert@aib, including a .txt of the message source, just in case there's anything important in it. I'm... hesitant to deal with the Gardaí, they always make me nervous.

Thanks for the heads up OP.

I followed the link, filled in my details and took a look at my account an hour later - TOO LATE!!!! They'd already cleaned it out completely :(

If only I'd been sent that email earlier I might have saved my money.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,814 ✭✭✭TPD

Don't reply anyway, you'll be added to an 'active email' list, and attract lots more spam.

Unfortunately, it came via my university mail account, which seems to have autoconfirmed that it's up and running. It gets a lot of spam because it seems to confirm it's working to the sender.

I'm not dumb enough to actually reply to the spammers directly..... I just want to annoy the hell out of 'em

Yes of course. Do you know of some other way I could have prevented these internet superhighway men from robbing my pocket monies?

If its the same IT unit that were looking after the website until a couple of months ago, I wouldn't hold out much hope. Does anyone remember the huge .bmp picture they had of the commissioner on the homepage?

Yes, that's identical to the one I received in my Yahoo 'spam' folder this morning. It appears very convincing and looks as though it genuinely comes from alert@aib.ie. Some people could easily get caught out by it!

Anyway, rang AIB and they said there were loads of these doing the rounds at the moment and to just 'forward' them on to alert@aib.ie and they'll sort it.
