friend has a 97 sir civic, and when he goes over 5500rpm vtec kicks in then at 6000 revs kinda stops and then kicks in again, the car keeps reving but vtec disengages and engages
anybody have an idea what it could be??

What jumps straight to mind is either 1) Low oil, 2) Wiring is fxcked or 3) Vtec solenoid is faulty, may need soldering again or new wiring.

thanks i'll let him now, its funny cos it only happened there yesterday, it was sound b4 that, must be low oil i'd say or maybe the oil pressure

And, seeing as you said it kicks in at 5500, does he have a VTEC controlller in it, cos that can play up with the VTEC, best advised not to use one TBH.

My guess is he wanted VTEC later, so messed around and now he basically doesnt get it, leave it at 4800 man :[

    Useless otherwise.

Still shouldnt be kickin in at 5500 man :/

Thats reserved for the K20s and whatnot ;L

well i remeber when vtec was kicking in the rsm read 5200rpm and rev counter would say 5500, would that make any difference thou??

yeah, usually theres a major difference in readings, so really no point in having them, and id get the timing checked out too, bring it down to the VTEC specialist in the industrial estate whos name escapes me.....beside the coca cola factory

i didnt see the edit to say it was a DC2 conversion, so thats spot on :L

Still probably low on oil or the VTEC solenoid playing up

Check the oil level, then the solenoid screen, then check the solenoid, by taking the solenoid apart and pushing on it with your finger to insure it moves smoothly. Then move on to oil pressure. If all else fails check all wiring.

For what needs to be done, dont go to Icetronix, 41 euro an hour, its a waste, bring it to any garage, they'll do it, not too hard.

And yeah do, let us know how it works ;)
