Are there any Hapkido Clubs within Dublin/Belfast?

    Hi,

    I'm new to this forum.

I have studied Wado Ryu Karate on-off for 10 years nearly, I'm finally nearing my goal of getting my Black Belt... 1 belt to go.

I would really like to take up Hapkido and from what I have seen via Youtube, it incorporates nearly to perfection every traditional move which can be used in every scenario modern day fighting.

After at least a month of searching the internet; I have only found clubs based in Bray, Waterford and Cork. I am shocked to see that there is absolutely NOTHING in Dublin......

http://www.worldtaekwondo.com.au/hapkido.html - I've seen this crowd but there's no details on classes

    http://www.corkhapkido.org/
    http://www.ucc.ie/tkd/hapkido.html
    http://massanghorbanimasterstemple.com/
    http://hapkido.ie/

Can someone please tell me if there are other clubs around?

I remember hearing that there was a dublin-based teacher named Ken Mahony whom taught Sin Moo Hapkido, and was going to open up a dojang in Rathmines?

However there is nothing from the net or asking around..... please help

I don't have his contact details, maybe some of the TKD guys here would (or else buy 'IrishFighter' magazine).

Anyway, in Dublin (Swords/Malahide) you've got Eugene McQuillan instructing Hapkido.

    Hi Octavia High Painter,

thanks for the response. However; I have heard that Eugene McQuillan packed up and left Swords a long time ago, nearly 2 years back I think to return to Taekwondo!

It's ridiculous that for a city of over a million people; Dubliners don't have Hapkido clubs on their doorstep.

I know Grandmaster Ghorbhani is a greatly reknowned teacher but I cannot commute to Bray because I don't have a car and the class times are unsuitable to attend unless I lived there, I live closer to rathmines and that would be so much easier to travel within the city or upto the Northside.

I didn't know Eugene had stopped training Hepkido, sorry about that.

Is there a specific reason why you want Hepkido as there might be another, similar, style around.

I think just watching its graceful movements and hard-hitting stop the opponents right in the tracks is enough really to attract me.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=760JCpYJMVk

It has almost every form of technique type available:

    Takedowns
    Throws
    Joint Locks
    Kicks
    Strikes
    Punches

and it shows how you can stop nearly every possible attack.

Eugene does still train in Hapkido. He does classes in Portmarnock now instead of Swords. Classes are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays but aren't starting back untill September.

Thanks GJF2442, is there an address for those Combat Hapkido classes in Portmarnock? Because I've found no details at all online relating to anything with Master McQuillan.

How different is ICHF compared to say Sin Moo or these guys? http://www.dukmoo.com/index.php?pageid=academy.html

I've had dealings with the 18 before, very bad encounters sadly. Its like waiting for the next full moon with that service, thanks for the information though anyway.

I would love to train with GrandMaster Ghorbhani, but like I've said before the 9pm-1030pm class on tuesdays and thursdays are bad times.... fridays for an hour seem a little short compared to the other classes in the week.

Just to ask, was there an instructor named Ken Mahony whom was going to be based in rathmines?

    http://massanghorbanimasterstemple.com/images/downloads/hapkido-i-fighter.pdf

Because this would've been perfect if he had been so close by for me to attend.

There is/was an instructor teaching Hapkido Classes in St. Catherines gym on Marrowbone Lane (just off Cork Street, Dublin 8).

    Instructors name is John Beveridge.

Im not sure if he is still teaching there. But if you phone the gym on 01 2227541 they'll let you know.

    Hope this helps,
    Andrew

    Hi DaBrow

We have a Hapkido club in Cork city.
    www.irelandhapkido.webs.com

    we are also on facebook.
Our club is strictly Hapkido, there are a lot of other clubs around who claim to be Hapkido clubs but in reality only brush the surface.
We are the Jin Jung Kwan style which is the original style hapkido and are always looking for new members and people who want to come and take a look.
I know we are in Cork so its a little difficult if you are in Dublin. But if you are around pop in for a look.

At the risk of sounding like the big bad Moderator (which I'm not).

You should read the stickies, there's a thread there were you can advertise your club. We put it there so threads like this wouldn't be brought completely off topic, and to help you guys get your club names & contact details out to the forum.

    Thanks Forcefield,

I'm looking at going back to university next year so I am looking at Cork aswell but most of my family live in dublin.

It's a shame that no-one senior from your club has plans on establishing a class in dublin; there aren't as many Hapkido clubs at all in the city.

I think Bray is your option, Massan teaches only Hapkido - and is a student of Ji Han Jae, one of the men that invented Hapkido. I'm one of his students and I can tell you, it's pure Hapkido. I have no car - I use the DART. Works just fine for me.

The last post before yours was 3 years ago. I'd say if the original poster hasn't gone to Bray yet, he's probably never going.
