    Hi all,
I have a 2001 passat which has developed a very strange problem, since shutting the bonnet yesterday it makes a grinding noise when braking, however further investigation discovered when I put pressure on the bonnet release mechanism the sound starts as if something is rubbing, I have checked the fan etc but can't see anything obvious Help !!!

A grinding noise when braking is usually a sign of the brake pads
needing renewal. Could be as simple as that.

This happened to my car, pads were very worn below recommended pad thickness. Pads were changed but a 'grinding' noise could be heard at low speed and while braking. Turned out to be some metal filings from the old pads were lodged in around the caliper, a bit of brake cleaner and copper grease sorted the problem and breaks are perfect now. :)

Might just be coincidence the grinding noise. Get them looked at as quick as possible though, leave it go too long and you could damage the discs and wind up with a bigger bill
