What happened?

Ok, so I switched on my laptop (inspiron 1525) this morning and the oddest thing happened.
It was like it was a new laptop.
All my documents were gone, all the albums I had burned had vanished, and it kept asking to install software for my "new" laptop (which is a year old).

I turned it off and then switched it back on again.
Everything seems to be in place now but I would still like to know what happened.

    Thanks in advance.

Is it possible you booted into the safe mode/administrator account?

More likely that your user profile could not be loaded and the OS loaded a temporary profile. The likelyhood is that it was a one off, if it keeps happening you might take a look at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318011/en-us?FR=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH
