i've seen some of the early punk posters he did and thought his bit in the mcsweeney's comic compilation was all right but i've heard a lot of people talk of him as COMIX HEAVYWEIGHT (was featured in art exhibition with robert crumb and will eisner) and chris ware said he was "one of the greatest artists on the planet" so yeah i kinda feel like i'm missing something here!!

basically what's a good comic by him to get started with and do i need to look at his stuff from some special context or what

God I love Gary even though he has fried half his brain on drugs [remember kids drugs are bad]. He is really out there but really super sweet.

Good work of Garys to start with would be prob be Jimbo - Jimbo in Purgatory or Jimbo's Inferno though they are giant oversized books that don't fit on any shelf or else try Cola Madnes. There is "Gary Panter" the big collected works book but it's a massive hardcover book around the 80 quid mark so prob not a good starter book. If you can track down some old issues of RAW that would be some of my fav work by him. He does alot of none comic work, alot of painting, drawing and printmaking and even these crazy ass light shows. You can check his website for a better list.

that's great, thanks! I've definitely seen Jimbo In Purgatory somewhere but it seemed a bit big 'n' costly for an impulse buy. Also I've been meaning to track down some old RAW issues anyway so this gives another reason!
