What films do you think were under-rated and did not receive the praise you believe they should have?

    *sigh*

    Its like everything.

    What beer is your favourite?
    What chocolate is the nicest?
    Who is your favourite band?

Its all subjective, different strokes for different folks.

Plus this kind of thread has been done, alot.

i assumed the thread was talking about quality films that did not recieve due critical acclaim and or commercial success around the time of release...a quality film is a quality film....its not subjective....casablanca for example is a quality film, the only subjectivity comes from what is the definition of the word 'quality'......but with that reasoning you could argue casper is a better film than casablanca....

    No,a film is subjective.

Apocalypse Now for example is raved about for various reasons by many many fans and critics alike.

Personally I was bored to tears with it.

Does it make it a bad movie?

    No.

    I just didnt like it.

Of course there are grey areas like Epic Movie, the Saw franchise etc. Most people hate them, but there are others that would defend them to the hilt,ie they are subjective.

First of all, Jako8, awesome sig!

Most underrated films? Depends, underrated seems to be both the films that are in fact great but are hated by most people (personal opinion) or those that received good reviews but still sit beneath the general public's radar (less personal opinion)

I'll go with the second selection, those little gems that are not as appreciated as they should be:

High Fidelity - Every cast member has never topped the performances they gave in this film, pure gold!

Pushing Tin - More Cusack, classic film!

Open Range - Kevin Costner finally redeems himself and nobody notices

Dog Soldiers - Did the biz within the horror genre circle but this film should be seen by as many film fans as possible!

Def agree with this, one of the best westerns ever, and the gunfight is outstanding

Its criminally underrated, Arnie completely takes the piss out of the persona he'd built up on screen over the years, its got some amazing in jokes and movie references, and Shane Black wrote the script, and Charles Dance is one of the best villains ever in it "I've just shot someone and I did it on purpose!"

I'd second last action Hero. I think it is much more of a clever movie then people give it credit for. how it sends up all action films ETC.

I personally always liked The man in the Iron Mask even though allot of people didn't take too it but it is like nedtheshed said. it really is just your own opinion.

I remember Open Water got like 4 stars in allot of reviews and I thought it was just awfull. and I'll continue to quote family guy by saying "I never cared for the godfarther" I know it was regarded as one of the best ever but for me. I thought it was cat.

    Hardly underrated though no?

The Matrix Reloaded. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed that film, yet everyone says how big a let down it was. The action was great, great fight scenes and car chases. I think people are basing it off the first Matrix and not viewing it in its own right.

bram stokers dracula = in my top 10
be cool = not nearly as good as get shorty but i always find it entertaining yet it was panned by critics

the shadow , watched it the other night , good but mostly forgotten superhero movie from the early nineties with alec baldwin

eraser = terrific action sequences , arnie in good form , james caan in better , the gorgeous vanessa williams a solid performance and a very good comedic role by the italian american guy , i think james coburn is in there aswell
shaft 2000 , always entertaining ,jackson and bale perfectly cast but the movie stolen by peoples ferrnandez

Id say 'Rumble Fish' too - a remarkable film

'King of Comedy' - ok maybe not underrated by critics but I always thought it was one of Scorseses top 2 or 3

You should shut down the forum, in that case. In fact, the whole 'Arts' category should be closed...

    Brazil ( Terry Gilliam 1985)

Fearless - Obviously there is retrospective curiousity with Jeff Bridges, Isabella Rossellini and Peter Wier, but it's still only 7.1 on IMDb.

Lawn Dogs - Again Sam Rockwell and "The O.C's Misha Barton" brings a new audience, but I don't hear many people talking about it. Obviously Christopher McDonald gets a look at all the roles Peter Gallagher turns down.

I'm a big fan of Dune (theatrical version). It has it's faults (some poor editing) but it's a flawed masterpiece. Got it on Blu-Ray recently..

Definitely The Devil's Backbone. Fantastic film from Del Toro that was largely over looked. Better than Pans Labyrinth imo.

Alpha Dog. Girlfriend picked this one out which led to much sighing and grumbling as I seen Justin Timberlake was in it and thought it was going to be pants. Turns out it's actually a pretty decent film.

Buffalo 66. Absolutely love that film. Gallo is perfect in his role. Can't understand why everybody wasn't raving about it upon it's release.

I would have to say The Mist - another film that got great reviews, but seemed to go straight to DVD and no one I know has a) heard of it and b) obviously then haven't seen it!.. but it was an excellent film the ending was one of the best I have seen in a long time..

    Late Night Shopping

Was on TV on Chriatmas Eve a couple of years ago. British no budget about 6 people who meet up in an all night cafe when they should be working. I cant put my finger on why but I loved it

The Shawshank Redemption, if you havent seen it you should...immediately!

If however don't get your hopes up too much if you've already seen stuff like
    Birdman of Alcatraz
I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang
    Cool hand Luke
    Papillon
    Midnight Express

Most people seem to think that Shawshank Redemption is better than it actually is, so it's hardly underrated.

when it first came out I believe it flopped at the box office

up to now I believe it has been correctly rated as one of the greats

    Yes it's a good film
No you couldn't call it underrated

I couldn't consider a cult film like "The Princess Bride" to be underrated because that's part of the cult thing.

Reign Of Fire - it's not great, but better than it's rated same with Van Helsing :pac:

Daredevil....really seems to be sh*t all over by people because Affleck is in it but I think it's a decent movie and deserved a sequel rather than the Elektra spin off.

Alpha Dog and High Fidelity are definitely worthy mentions here, So well done to the posters who mentioned them!

Other films I would include here would be:
