S40 1.6 D-Black Smoke under acceleration

05 S40 blowing out black smoke under acceleration. Changed oil, fuel, air filters, added Red-ex just to rule out all those things. But still seems the same to me. It only has 63,000 miles.
Anybody have any specific experience of this engine; seems to be in a lot of cars like the Focus, 407, MINI to name a few?

Just wondering is it possibly the injectors or something. Going fine, but want to get it checked over ASAP.

Long shot, but have you recently remapped or stuck a tuning box on it?

Is there some sort of problem!? welcome to the dark side.

Could it be the diesel partical filter? I read that these get clogged up may need replacing at around 70k miles.

Get a mechanic to have a look at it first before spending money based on speculation though.

I've several diesels before, even a Bora and it was never smoky! Even smoke stain on the lower rear bumper above the exhaust. Sister was driving behind me today and noticed it big time. So definitely a problem!

its just them hdi engines. when they push on in years and mileage they seem to through out a bit of black smoke when accelerating. the same diesel engine is used in most volvos, peugeots, mazdas, citroens and fords.

I don't know, i think this is disproportionately bad. My sister and mother noticed it ffs! I don't mind a good puff of smoke under acceleration but i do think this is excessive.

My current car is a S40 with the same engine and has just over 70k miles on it. It doesn't push out any noticably black smoke under acceleration, neither did my previous Focus TDCi.

Sounds like EGR valve.. if its not working, then the exaust gases that it supposidly recirulcates for burning....are being passed out the rear.

Hi mfitzy, I've a 407 1.6 hdi and I've noticed the same thing lately. Even under light acceleration sometimes I get black smoke and haven't a clue why. Also, engine fan tends to stay on for a few mins after turning off the engine (not all the time, just now and again). Does yours do that too?

    EDIT:
Cheers tred, hadn't spotted your post there. Must get the ERG valve checked. Car is due to go into the garage next week anyway so will mention it to them. Thanks

I've got the same engine in my 407 also.....:)
Is there any mil light on??
as mentioned above these engines have dpf's (diesel particle filters)
and sometimes need to be replaced around 80-100k.....
if its pushing out alot of black smoke there is a high risk of your dpf blocking.

On the 407's every 300miles or so these engines go through a dpf regeration which cleans the filter.
Aidan Mc your fan runs on at high speed when the dpf if going through a
regen....the reason is to put an extra load on the engine to bring up
the exhaust temp to burn off the black soot thats built up in the filter and
to lower the temp of your dpf when you stop the car....the dpf can reach
up around 5-600 deg's C when burning off the soot...

Going back to the problem mfitzy you would need to get some faults codes read (if any).
As above it maybe the egr valve then again it maybe your injectors
    over fueling....
    Row.

No, no engine fan staying on, just the smoke.

There is no wastegate on these engines as the have a Variable geometry turbocharger ....but saying that it still could be a turbo problem....

You should be getting a mil light on if the turbo has blown as the map sensor
measures the turbo boost pressure it should bring up a fault if the sensor
    if reading incorrectly...
Think you need to get it plugged into diagnostic equip to see if there are any fault's logged on the engine ecu....:)

Seen the turbo intake pipe getting broken before and causing this.
If its that bad go get it checked!

That's what we'll do. Have a fairly good mechanic on hand. Could be turbo but I reckon it would be far more pronounced and a total lack of power if it were gone.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Some very helpful and based on experience...others less so. Bring it to mechanic during the week and get her plugged in ;)

I had the same problem, get some some fuel additives which give the engine a clean out. Don't listen to the cock and bull!

    Happy driving:D

Ha ha, I don't intend to! I tried red ex already so it must be another issue.

Got it sorted (I hope anyhow :)) today. Seems the inlet manifold had a good bit of charcoal and gunk partially clogging it up. Also turbo inlet pipe was partially blocked as well. Took her for a good spin, no black heavy smoke anymore. And seems a bit peppier as well.
Poster with the 407 with similar problem, try this avenue as well.

Did you get it looked at since? ERG valve was also a small bit sooty but not excessively, apparently. Cleared that as well as the other stuff in previous post..

There's nearly 64,000 miles on her now. I'd say it hasn't been 100% since about 10 or 15k miles ago though. I do keep her serviced regularly and that but it was just my old mechanic didn't have a clue what was wrong and it was not particularly acute 'til relatively recently.

why do you say its not 100% since 10 or 15k.....
If you have the same engine as i have (1.6hdi) the only issues are
dpf's around 80k+ and dmf's...like every other modern diesel today....

No I phrased that badly! I mean the heavier smoke issue only started around 15k miles ago...i.e. at around 50k miles :)
Same engine, the 109 bhp version in the S40.

Problem got worse again and we brought it to a diesel specialist a few weeks ago. Basically the EGR Valve was sticking and had to be replaced. Also, he found a tiny fracture in a turbo pipe and repaired that too.

Has been absolutely perfect since and fuel economy way up...53 mpg now again. No smoke whatsoever, even under acceleration.
