I have never owned a gun...do I need to get a training certificate before I can apply for a license?

There is a section on the Garda License Application form...Could anyone cast some light on this?

No I believe it is for the age of between 14 & 16. You will still have to prove you are competent in the use possession & carrying of a firearm (Sect 2.5) if it is your first firearm
    Good Luck

Not necessarily, deerhunter1. Anyone of any age can apply for a training cert.

It would be recommended for beginners. It's half the price and doesn't require you to actually purchase a firearm.

Who issues them? I have found no reference on it on the net...

Well I used to go shooting with a gun owned by a range so I know how to use them but just wondering if it is mandatory...for over the age limit?

Your local Garda Superintendant (or Chief Superintendant in the case of a Restricted Firearm); the Training Firearm Certificate is just one type of Firearm Certificate that can be applied for with the new FCA1 form.
Take a look at the Announcment at the top of the main forum for more details:
Firearms Licence Renewal Information => Please read this before asking about the changes in the licence this year!

There's no upper limit on who can apply for the Training Firearm Certificate, but it's the only one for which a person aged 14-16 can apply.

    Clarification:
That's 14 or 15 years old; once someone turns 16, they can apply for any of the other 'full' licence types if they wish.

We have rather complicated system here don't we? It is a bit like the old provisional driving license isn't it?
