Looking to get out more

I've decided to try to get out more socially. I don't drink and don't socialise much. I get on well enough with people, but don't have many people to get on with! I don't like nightclubs, dancing or sports. So they are out.

I've been looking here and elsewhere for book clubs. I see one in Dublin, but they only meet once a month. Perhaps that's enough, but it would be nice to have something a bit more available than just once a month.

I've also been looking for hillwalking clubs. I don't really want to pay a big subscription to a club that will teach me to go mountaineering. I'd rather just meet an informal group to go walking the main forest trails, than four or five hour hikes across bogs and heavy mountainside.

I'd like to ease myself into some friendly informal social group, with not too many members, where there might be other newbies too, rather than try to break into a large, well established clique. I am trying to develop more social confidence, so nothing too intimidating.

Evening classes are out, there's nothing I want to study right now, but more importantly, with work commitments I'm not always available, and I can't afford subscriptions and fees for things.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is anyone a member of anything interesting, that welcomes new members? Does anyone have any specific links I might follow? Thanks.

Hill walking great idea-can't see it costing too much. Also the book club you mentioned which only meets once a month-this is pretty normal with book clubs. Go for it, once a month better than nothing! Never know what frienships might come out of it!
What about your local historical society? These talks can be pretty interesting too...?
