Any help would be great or even links to other sites for refrence, thanks in advance

Sky+ requires a Sky+ subscription, so you cannot just get a sky+ box, and plug it in...

You will need to replace the Lnb to a quad and run a second cable which is required in order to get full functionality out of the sky + and you will then need to ring up sky to get thew sky + features added to your card.

so would i be better off getting a box from sky instead of going the DIY route? is the DIY route a flase economy?

    yes.

DIY free channels PVR (Humax Freesat etc) is good value but won't do pay TV. You can have both wiith a Sky+ upgrade, as the two spare Quad LNB outputs can be used.

The Sky+ or SkyHD don't record/play even free channels without a sub.
