Help....Revenue Investigation for €300

    Folks,
I have received a letter from the Revenue regarding some medical expenses that I claimed in 2008. I claimed back €300, however I dont have the receipts and cannot remember the details regarding the breakdown of this.

I just cannot believe that the revenue is now hounding innocent PAYE workers to reduce their income deficit.

There was a big push on the public regarding the claiming of tax credits/ reliefs by the Revenue and Institute of Taxation a while back and now they want to screw the people of Ireland for that money back. I have always acted with honestly and I claimed for my expenses on the online PAYE system.

What can I do to stop them staeling my money?

    Many thanks,

I think unfortunately as you claimed the tax relief you are obliged to keep receipts as back up:(

Is there any way you could go back to your GP/doctor who might be able to check the amount you paid them in 2008? They might put it in writing for you and Revenue might accept that.

At least its not that much money in the big scheme of things, the tax relief available was only a certain % of the total medical expenses. Good luck sorting it out:)

surely if you paid €1500 in medical bills you should be able to get a copy of the invoice from the doctor

As part of the claim, you are obliged to keep the receipts for 7 years (or is it 5) in the case of a random audit. This is outlined to you when you submit your claim.

If you cannot get copies of the receipts, then unfortunately, you may be asked to pay back the tax money you were refunded.

The system is based on trust and they do perform random audits to ensure that people are not making false claims.
