Does anyone have any experience of trying to get a guitar into the cabin as the one item of cabin baggage...
i measured the height of the guitar and i am about 50 cm over.Do Ryanair stringently follow the dimensions as listed on their website?
I know i have gotten my guitar onto an Aer lingus cabin with no hassle.

Has anyone ever managed to bring a guitar into the cabin on a Ryanair flight for no extra charge?

    http://www.ryanair.com/site/IE/faqs.php?sect=CHARGES

€30 booked on line or €40 at the airport to check it in. I would say no chance of getting it on as cabin baggage as they have set charges for musical instrument check in.

If it does not fit into the metal frame they use to measure cabin baggae then there is no chance.

Have brought a Baby Taylor on one flight. Its bigger than the metal basket but I said nothing and just brought it on as hand luggage. On the return flight I tried to do the same and they wouldn't let me on the plane with it. I explained I had brought it on before and that it fits into the overhead compartments with ease. Weren't having any of it. Just wanted me to cough up some money because it was an instrument. All the baggage was already on the plane and I had to pay extra to put it on in the hold. Really put me off flying with ryanair. Haven't used them since

That term is completely contradictory in itself. Ryanair / No extra charge....ammm, nope! No there are charges. I'm not sure how much but it's on their website.

If you go away on holidays and put on a few extra pounds, coming back they charge you extra now...

Forgot to mention. I brought an expensive acoustic back from the UK and bought it its own seat on the plane. Was about €40 for the seat and it never leaves your side. Depending on the cost of the flight this can be a much better option. I've had an acoustic damaged on a flight and the repair bill came to about €250. Just weigh up the options depending on the cost of an extra seat and the value of the guitar.

How do you book a seat for the instrument. I'm assuming it doesnt have a passport number?

Nope but it has a name. I had to fill out a passenger name for the guitar so I put it as Mr Lakewood Guitar. That's what was printed on the ticket. Yup, it had its own ticket and boarding pass. haha. It made for some interesting conversation at the check in desk :) They said it happens a bbit and is perfectly fine to do

Brian May used to book his famous self-made guitar onto flights on the neighbouring seat as "A.Guitar".

A few years ago I bought a custom Fender Tele in Holland and brought it back.

Although it was Aer Lingus, the standard electric guitar flight case will fit in the overheads of a 737 surprisingly well - I thought I wouldn't have a chance in hell of getting it up there, but they are bigger than they look.

I don't think you'd stand a chance in hell of doing that with Ryanair.

Im going to chance bringing my yamaha half size travel guitar on board as my carry on bag...its about 30 cm longer than allowed but maybe i can disguise it by putting a jacket over it, or if that fails, the old jedi mind trick...

    Wish me luck!;)

Well if I were you I would take 40 quid in your pocket to pay for checking it in just incase you dont get away with it.

30cms is too much or a risk esp if the flight is full and they will be looking for anything 1cm over the allowance to charge people for.

On a full flight it's hard enough for people with correct sized luggage to find somewhere to put it - even harder if a bulky guitar case is taking up half of the bloody compartment. Book it in or buy an extra seat.

A travel guitar is no more bulky than a packed carry-on travel bag. It will also most likely be in a soft case. It's pretty thin and small overall it's just a little taller because of the neck. I dont know about your yamaha but with the baby taylor there are two screws holding the neck in place. I was trying to find a screwdriver in the airport to take off the neck and thus it would have fit in the ryanair basket thing. Had no luck but if you could temporarily remove the neck it would deffinitely fit within their limits.
