Disabling faulty webcam

Lately the Webcam on my XPS 1530 has started to malfunction. I'm pretty sure it's just down to a worn cable having split inside it's insulation. I couldn't be arsed actually putting a warranty claim in on it, because I don't actually use the webcam anyway, and normally I'd just ignore it, but Windows insists on mounting/unmounting it each time I move the lid, and it gets annoying, especially when it does it in rapid order.

I also suspect that all the mount/unmounts are causing an ongoing glitch with the OS.

It's not a problem in Linux, mind... it deals with it pretty happily and doesn't bug me over constantly connecting with a faulty device.

What I want to know is, is there a way to disable the webcam entirely. Disabling the device in device manager only disables it for a few minutes until it manages to reconnect briefly and trigger another automatic mount. I was thinking I could disable the USB hub/controller it connects to, but I don't want to accidentally disable another important device which connects to it.

    Any ideas?

Dartz, just to give an example, on the Asus Eee netbooks, the webcam can be active or disabled at the bios level.

Have you had a look at your bios options?

Only to disable all USB devices... it was the first thing I checked

Go for the webcam loom, I would be the sort to unplug it myself.
