    Hi,
Just moved into the new gaff and need help choosing a TV.

    Budget:- max 700euro

Screen size:- max 40" ( its gonna be for a normal 4 bed semi sitting room, and dont want it to be stupid looking!)

Need it for NTL digital, PS3, dvd player...thats about it! (maybe a surround sound added later on)

    Cheers

Currently have the eye on the Samsung LE40B550 (€699 in powercity)

OP, the 40B550 will be a fine tv for your needs. It will do a fine job of upscaling and will be great with the PS3. The one thing it does lack is 100Hz, but that shouldn't bother you unless you're used to it already.

I guess your not going to consider a plasma set?

I know its 42" but in many ways its a better tv than the samsung. For a start, its a plasma so fantastic motion clarity is as standard. Also it is only HD ready as opposed to full HD, so it will do a much better job of upscaling NTL and dvd's. Now, for ps3 it wont be quite as good but you probably need to ask yourself, whats more important. Full hd for ps3 or better picture quality for normal tv

Thats true but you linked to an LG Plasma which IMO are frankly terrible, the Samsung B550 would be a far superior TV.
I wouldn't get a Plasma unless it was either a Panasonic or Samsung.

Well, even up to last year,, i would have agreed with you. I have seen that one in action, though and it did impress me.Pretty far off a G10 but certainly as good as a Pana 42pv80 a friend of mine has. I just think its worth a look for the OP anyway. Not a bad price either

These two too then i guess. Cant see them being hugely(Or any, in the samsungs case) better than the LG though!

    Thanks for the advice lads.

Few questions though since i know absolutely nothing about these new tvs...

I was told by a friend to go for LCD over Plasma everytime?

And also for Full HD over HD Ready...?

My main use will be for NTL tv, i dont play PS3 too much. Also i dont get dvd's much but i do want good quality when i do...
I also intend to hook up the laptop to watch divx movies, is this difficult?
